Anna Hopen and Soren Sorensen from Norway to USA Help Pleas
Hello
Im trying to help a friend . Norway research is new to me and I do not understand very well.
Anna Hopen Is said to have come with Soren Sorensen to Wisconsin,USA around 1890.
We can not find them in USA census. In 1891 Anna gave birth to a son she named Henri Ole Sorensen. She was not married to Soren Sorensen . we dont know if it was his child or she just gave him that name.
would anyone have and information or know how to find an Anna Hopen coming to USA with Soren Sorensen around 1890.
Not much information I know but all we have.

Hello I have been searching the imigrationlist to try to find Anna Hopen. Many Anna but there are nobody who had the last name Hopen.Did she have another last name?found many Soren Sorensen also. But difficult to know who it may be.So if thats all information you have it could be very hard to find them.Do you know where they came from.Maybe if you knew that it will help us finding them

Re: Anna Hopen and Soren Sorensen from Norway to USA Help P
I found a Anna Hopen in the 1900 count for Kristiansund. But if she already was in Wisconsin in 1891 it cant be her...Strange because I cant find her in earlier count.

Robin, where dit Henri grow up? With whom? Where was he born? Was he born in Norway? Do you have his birthdate?
Usually people took name after the farm they lived on when they emigrated. Hopen farmname is found in 3-4 counties in Norway, so we need more information.

http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/localities ... 63/mb.ashx
and here:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1211481929
And here i found some information about a Anna (Hopen):
http://www.plu.edu/~archives/sie/oral/i ... /t129.html
"Carl Tweiten was born on June 12, 1909 in Deming, Washington. His parents were Omund Tweiten and Pauline Liland, and he was the eldest of eight children, including Martha (Handeland), Oscar, Anna (Hopen), Alma, Bertha, Jørgen, and Thor. Carl's father first came to America from Tweiten, Sirdal, Norway in 1897-1898, and made three trips back and forth before settling in Tacoma"

Sorry im not much help with info. Henri was born in Wisconsin. Highbridge is where he lived but we can not find a birth cert for him under the name of Henri Sorensen. Anna is said to have died when he was around 9. After that he went to stay with Foster parents. this where we start to find Information. the 1900 census has him living with the Isak Abrahamson family. The census lists him as a son but he was a foster child. The family has pictures. He later moved in with the Johnson family in Wisconsin. around the 1940s he offically changed his name to Henry Oscar Johnson and we belive this is when he applied for a birth cert.
The problem is there are no records saying where Anna was from. There is nothing we can find for 1890 census records.
I know this is very little to go on . I just keep hoping something will turn up that puts Anna with Soren Sorensen. Or that lists her with Sorensens and a child Henry.
My friend has sent for a search of wisconsin birth records to see if they can turn something up that has Anna and her origins listed. The only thing Henry ever told anyone was that she came from Norway with Soren Sorensen as a servant.
Thank You to all who have tried to help us. If I learn any new dates or information I will pass it along.

Re: Anna Hopen and Soren Sorensen from Norway to USA Help P
Hello, a friend of mine sent information in the year 2008. Some of the information was not correct according to what I have now. This is what my father and uncle told me about Anna M. Hopen, their grandmother (my gr-grandmother). They said she ran away from Norway when she was 17 years old. She was a stowaway on the ship she took to the USA (no ticket). She would have had to reach the USA about the year 1863 According to the information I have collected, the church she belonged to said she was 48 years old when she died and the cemetery records say she was 45 years old. I believe the church is more accurate so her birth would be 1846. She died Dec 21, 1894. Anna was married to Henry M. Johnson, he was born Feb 10, 1844 and died Nov 23, 1887. Henry purchased The Scandinavian House (a boarding house) in 1884 in Ashland, Wisconsin. They adopted a little girl in 1885, her name was Jennie Melvina (Johnson). When Henry died in 1887, Jennie became the Heir of the House. She sold it Jan 6, 1900. During 1888-1891 a Martin Sorensen/son lived in the boarding house. All these years I've believed he is the father of my grandfather, Henry Olai Sorsenson. Looking at my grandfather's Delayed Birth Certificate, there are two sets of parents listed. My grandfather had to file for this document to receive other information. He wrote his parents names as Father- Martin Sorenson, Mother-Martha Johnson. On the bottom of the certificate these names were listed as his parents then another set of parents were listed, Father-Henry Johnson, Mother-Anna Hopen. This makes me wonder if Martha was Henry and Anna's daughter and Anna took custody of my Henry because Martha was too young to raise him. On this certificate my grandfather legally changed his name to Henry Oscar Johnson.
