Notice that the 1530 Visitation of Sussex gives Constance, daughter of
Henry Dyke, only one husband -- John Goring ...

Also note that the NEHGR account of the Gifford family of Middle
Claydon, Bucks., shows Sir George Gifford married, as his first wife,
to "Constance Dyke, dau. and coheiress of Henry," with no mention of
any earlier husband:

However, the contemporary _Diary of Henry Machyn, Citizen and Merchant-
taylor of London_ clearly states that "Sir George Gyfford maryed to
his fyrst wyff the doter of Dyke of Sussex and wedoo of Goryng of
Sussex ..."

(I love the way Machyn renders the maiden name of Sir George Gifford's
mother -- "Ansehalles," rather than the more commonly given
"Nansicles" or "Nanseglos.")

It seems this first marriage represents an addition to the HOP,
1509-1557, sketch of Sir George Gifford, which only mentions two wives
-- Bardfield and Trappes.

The sketch of Constance Dyke Goring's son Sir William Goring in HOP,
1509-1557, states he was born "by 1500." As Sir George Gifford is
said in the same source to have been born "by 1496," it seems he must
have been much younger than his first wife.
