I wonder what is currently thought of the origins of Francis Norton, who
died in July 1667 at Piscataqua, New Hampshire.

"Norton, Mr. Francis, 1584-1667, m. by 1640 Mary Houghton Philips, was
literate, merchant, husbandman, church member in 1642, wife 1639,
Freeman in 1642, office: "sm", deputy, 110 acres, in Charlestown,
Massachusetts in 1637." [NEHGR 131 (1977):121,131].

Abundant unconvincing data claiming him to be a younger son of William
(d.1622, Cornhill, London) and Dionysia (Cholmeley) Norton (bur. 1628,
Streatley, Bedfordhire) exists online.

Thanks.

Is it known whether William's will [Probate of the will of William
Norton, gentleman, of Streatley, Beds, proved PCC 26 November 1622,
PROB 11/1140, available online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for a
small download-fee] names a son Francis? The various Visitations that
mention this family (London, 1633-5; Beds, 1634; Herts, 1634) don't
seem to include him.

I particularly admire the online references to his putative mother,
"Dionisia Cholemsky"...

Francis is supposed to have been either a fishmonger, or a
haberdasher,
from London, as given in Waters' Genealogical Gleanings:

http://books.google.com/books?id=6miNzg ... fishmonger

If you search the apprenticeship registers for those companies,
you might find the answer.

I recently looked at the will of William Norton of Streatley.
He does mention a son Francis, but says nothing special about him.
However, eldest son William is not mentioned at all - he's the one who
had
two sons who went to Ipswich, Mass.

The supposed birth year of 1584 for Francis is probably wrong,
as that means he first married at age 55.
