Familien flyttet til Jevnaker en gang på 1890 tallet, der faren; Syvert Andersen, var ansatt på Randsfjordbanen. Lorang gikk I lære hos baker Askim på Jevnaker og fikk fagbrev som baker. Han emigrerte til USA I 1900 med båten Hekla og ankom Ellis Island.
Han er der ført som Lorang Andersen uten Martinius.
Lorang har 2 elder halvsøstre som emigrerte tidligere. Disse er Maren Johanne Andersen født 1862 og Josefine Andrine Andersen født 1868. Disse er det nok vanskeligere å finne da de nok er gifte og derved fått nye familienavn
