Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
I am searching for more details regarding Hendrik Johan Jacobsen. Born in Bergen, Norway on April 13, 1856, He first left Bergen on June 4, 1880 traveling on Inman Line through presumably England to Chicago. He returned to Norway and then left again for Chicago from Bergen on February 18, 1885 on Cunard Line. Again he settled in Chicago. The plan was that his wife and children would join him later. However, he was reported killed in Chicago and his family never went to the US. We have not been able to find any details regarding his life in Chicago - including how he passed away. The attached picture was take in Chicago (year unknown) and the collar may indicate that he belonged to some kind society or union. I would be very happy if anyone couild help us unveil this mystery, e.g. what this collar represent.

Re: Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
Dear Patty
Thank you for looking into my query. Sorry for the picture not showing. I have tried to reload it. He trained as a tailor in Norway, but we think he worked as a carpenter in Chicago. We do not know how he spelled his name in the US - it could be Henrik or Hendrik and Jacobsen or Jakobsen - but probably not Jakobson as the -son would be mainly for Swedish at that time.

Hei igjen Tore
I found the listing in a Chicago City Directory 1887 for
Henry Jacobsen, carpenter
(sorry I can not put in the link)
Just a possible puzzle piece.
My husband looked at the photo..he does not know the "outfit" (sash/collar)...
What is at the top right on the sash (his left shoulder)..are those letters?

Re: Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
Hi
Thank you. The letters on his left side is "WM" - and these letters does not have any meaning as we know toward his Norwegian heritage. Thus, I think it is related to a lodge or organization in Chicago.

The letters may refere to a lodge or a spesific position in a (spesific) lodge.Tore skrev:The letters on his left side is "WM" - and these letters does not have any meaning as we know toward his Norwegian heritage. Thus, I think it is related to a lodge or organization in Chicago.

Re: Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
Hei!
I wonder if he was part of a carpenter's union (organization)
There was a union organized in Chicago in 1881.

But I do not know if a "special" member would wear that kind of clothing as shown in the photo.

Kan du ikke bare sende bildet til https://www.carpentersunion.org og spørre? Kanskje har de de gamle medlemslistene også.

Re: Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
You are right, it does not look like any Masonic Collar I know, but there are many different Lodges. The letters are used by most english spoken Masonic Lodges. It is a title of authority used by the (elected) head of a Masonic Lodge.

Hei Grete
How does I.O.G.T. (lodge) translate paa engelsk...i ordene..
Knights Templar organization???
I found that a Knights Templar sash/collar is also called a baldric.
Templar sashes/baldrics had stars with nine points on it...

Re: Hendrik J Jacobsen - member of lodge?
Hei Tore,
I think you should send that photo to a public library in Chicago...tell them a little about Hendrik...esp that you think he was a carpenter ....etc...
They might be very interested in this photo too...perhaps they might add it to their collection/archives.

By the way do you have a record of his emigration from Norway?

Hei Grete
Templars and the Temperance movement are different.
Temperance Movement had to do with stopping the sale of alcohol (liquor) in the USA.
