Files from Apple using PAF

Legg inn av Paul Blair » 7. mars 2005 kl. 9.13

Some advice, please...

I've been offered a GEDCOM from PAF 2.5 (if that was the last Apple
version?) for use in Australia. It will be sent by e-mail to my PC

The sender seemed a bit cautious about my handling this, due to
"technology differences". Well, I have a range of Windows apps that
accept GEDCOMs, surely one of them will handle this.

But if anyone knows differently, please let me know. It might save me
making hard work of something :-)

TIA

If it is a GedCom then any of the many reputable programs will import it
with varying degrees of accuracy - try a couple of different ones and see
what the differences are. Check things like sources and notes. Open the
GedCom in a text editor and see if there is anything in it that you dont see
come up in obvious places - takes some interpretation but it is do-able.

If it is a Mac file for Paf then maybe only Paf for Mac will read it but as
Paf is usually so friendly I would give it a go with Legacy or one of the
many other programs that open Paf files.

Make sure you make a copy before you do all this.

Searching http://www.google.com for
PAF 2.31 Gedcom
I find confirmation that there may be a difference (the Legacy site says
"Personal Ancestral File is now used in two different flavors, 2.5x and
3.x, and since they handle notes, sources and repositories in radically
different ways" - http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/TourExport.asp)
between the GedCom required for input to different versions of PAF - the
page gives details.

http://www.svpafug.org/convert.pdf indicates that GedCom from all
earlier versions of PAF can be imported to PAF 5, but not whether
identical databases are created.

Well, the files turned up as .DAT - I wonder how I deal with that!
Scanning through them shows some odd format...

I haven't seen a reply as yet, so permit me to point out that those would be
PAF 2.x files. FTW will import them.

Bob:

Thank you. The indiv2 file is 60kb, full of hieroglyphics, and while FTW
is happy to accept the file, it brings no names (no anything!) to the
FTW file. As well as indiv2, there are marr2, namadd2, name2 and notes2
files, part of the same suite, I guess.

The data came from LA, so I will need to go back and get a fresh copy, I
think.

Cheers

Paul

I'm assuming you did an Append/Merge. You could try the Ancestral Quest demo then
http://www.ancquest.com/faqs.htm. Here's some more info on those files and it
saves me the typing.
PAF 2.31 – This is one of the very first versions of the PAF Program. Depending on
whether the file is a data
file (.dat) or backup file (.bak), the extensions are as follows: Indiv2.dat or
indiv2.bak, marr2.dat or marr2.bak, namadd2.dat or namadd2.bak, name2.dat or
name2.bak, notes2.dat or notes2.bak, reptitl2.dat or reptitl2.bak. Indiv2 can
be a combination of all six files.

The data came from LA, so I will need to go back and get a fresh copy, I

LALA Land eh? :-)

Have fun

Just for the record, the original author cut me a GEDCOM file, and it

imported just fine into PAF5, FTM, Legacy5.

Seems to be the way to go...thanks to everyone for their inputs. I
learned a lot!
