FTM Marriage Order

Legg inn av Patscga » 27. desember 2004 kl. 18.13

I have some people who were married twice but I don't know the dates of those
marriages. FTM apparently doesn't understand that the person who died first
was the first husband and sometimes puts the second husband first. Is there a
way to sort these without making up dates?

I give them a year of marriage to get them sorted in the right order.
Then I remove the "false" year, the wives or husbands stays in that order. :D John

Yep, Pat...put made-up dates in to get names in the correct order. Then

delete the dates.

Brilliant, elegant, and simple. Great suggestion, Paul. Sometimes the
obvious answer is right there waiting to be pointed out.

Thanks to all for this remedy.

When I do this I make sure to leave a note under the "More" tab so that I
remember that the date in question is false.

Don't leave the false dates in. Just put them in long enough to get
the spouses in the correct order then remove them immediately. Pam

Ah, but Paul's suggestion is to put in dates just specifically to get FTM
to put them in the right order, and then delete the date so as to not cause
the confusion. A program's limitations is never a good reason to leave
incorrect data in your research, note or not.

Some programs will accept ordinal values in date fields.
This will get the people in the correct order but are
so obviously not dates that there's no need to remove
them.

Then there's good ol' "ca." to indicate nothing more
than a guess...

One can sometimes use Bef YYYY and Aft YYYY to make them sort correctly.

Any false date I put in would be an "abt" date anyway, or aproximately what
the date should be. In my mind abt dates are dates used to hold a place, or
as a starting point for future research. I keep two files going at all
time, one with about dates, before dates, aproximate dates, etc. The other
has only confirmed dates, or before and after dates I can confirm.

However, the real problem is that I did not really read the entire post on
false dates, and I now see that the poster meant to insert patently false
dates, just to get the order of spouses correct, and then delete those
dates. In the case of just getting a display order correct then I can see
using false dates, for just as long as it takes to order the entries.
