GENERATING A GENEALOGY WEBSITE?

Legg inn av Terry » 23. desember 2004 kl. 16.26

Hi, all--A cousin in the UK and I are contemplating putting together a
website that would contain the family data we have managed to gather.
The database was compiled with Family Origins and contains quite a few
images of various things ranging from head shots to gravestones. There
are over 3000 souls in more than 1000 families, almost 5000 events,
and several hundred sources involved. It would be nice to be able to
access them all.

Could someone suggest a reputable source that deals in this sort of
thing? In the past, I've read about certain entities "harvesting" the
data and then selling it as part of a package. We would like to avoid
that if possible.

All suggestions, comments, etc., are welcome! Thanks in advance and
Merry Christmas to all!

Cheers--T

Hi

In an ideal world that would be good. Unless the entire site is in code, which
would rather defeat its object, then I don't think that would be possible.

You could make it a pay per view site and a very good one is this one.

http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk

That would keep your site just for the people who really want to look at it.

However, it will involve a lot of work and you must have good hyperlinks to the
various parts on the site. You can employ someone to make your website but it
will be quite expensive and you are looking at many hours work at between
£10-£20 per hour.

The other alternative is that you could buy a good programme for making your
website and do it yourself but it is not easy. You still have to buy space
with a compoany to put out your website.

Good Luck whatever you choose.

Merry Christmas

Saw and saved this link a while back, it still works,
http://www.frontiernet.net/~rjacob/gedpage.htm

I have never tried it but it looks like it will do what you are
asking. Be carefull NOT to include ANYTHING without permission, people
tend to get VERY upset!
Also include some "fake" info, that way you will know if the data is
stolen. Some people have just put "email so and so" instead of the
actual data but that can be a hinderence to people trying to link in
too.

Be very careful about publishing anything about living people. This is to
protect their privacy and security (identity theft, etc).
Best bet is to only include data over 100 years old.

Also, include some means for readers to get in touch with you. I get 1 or 2
emails a month from people visiting my site and who are rearching the same
ancestors.

thousands of people use it everyday

You find my data on rootsweb and family tree maker auto generated websites

which I delete and repost to update every 3 months or so
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... index.html

I am 69 in a few days and when I die the web sites will be inherited like
any other property by my heirs

If I use a pay site it will be deleted when the payments stop

I have not "done" the family photos yet

my blogs are a basic self publishing and get between 100 to 200 page views
daily

other peoples advertising pays for my web space
and I don't care who copies any of it

a lot more of my stuff in Google groups back to 1996 should survive my
demise too

There are many opinions circulate on this topic.
With most ISPs people get a free website.
I use that for my genealogy. Since it is on a webpage that I own
it is under copyright, actually it would be anyway
unless you agree to a contract giving up ownership...which is
what happens in some of those websites who offer to put your
genealogy out there for free. I think Rootsweb is rather honest
and safe.

I would like to add, that we should never ever count on the
website as being our archive or our records or pictures. There
are many reasons that a website might disappear. In my case,
the website I have on my ISPs host I copied down entirely to
a directory on my PC.

Hello;
I use this site just for that reason. The cost is the program and I
find it to be as good and better in some ways than FTW as a search site
and a site that will update as you use the program. The sit also has a
free area and can be public or closed.
http://www.gencircles.com/
Go to this site and see what I am talking about,

http://www.gencircles.com/users/john-olson/8

I have a blog site that is a paid site but fills the bill for its use
and it is public.
Labear.squarespace.com this is government (PA), Community, and
Genealogy.

Take a look at http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/

You can build or host your family tree on this site, access to the tree is
by Password so it can't be stolen.

You can upload your gedcom to it and it will make your tree for you but I'm
not sure about pictures.

Kind regards,

Hi Terry,

I run treefic.com and it might do what you want. Copyright in site
content remains yours and you can choose either to make the site public
or to restrict it only to those who know a password. You can upload a
GEDCOM file to get started and then you and your cousin can make
changes directly on line. At http://treefic.com there are a few demos
and at http://treefic.com/admin/users/cgi there are links to current
users' public sites.

Happy New Year!

Phil Endecott.
