I am an American with roots from Norway. I am trying to locate information about my great grandfathers parents. My great grandfather is Syver Bergslien. He was born In Norway. I believe he had brothers Magnus and Martinuse. Syver was born 1860. I believe they would have lived near Oslo or 100 miles north near Rangebu.

I am willing to trade by helping in any way I can from this side of the world.

Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

I had trouble with membership but finally got registered.

Thank you all so very much for all your input. I had almost given up my search but you all have renewed my interest.

I am currently looking at every link you have supplied. It is slow because i have to translate everything to understand. You will be happy to know I have purchased a Norwegian language book and will try to learn to communicate better.

Tjenestegut - a young servant. Gut = boy.
ug=not married.
skydsgut=when they were traveling they need help by a boy sometime.
Trøtten - wrong written, the right is Tretten. Means a parrish near Lillehammer.
Not a city, but a rural district in Øyer township.

I cannot believe how much time it takes to find information on ancestors. I am having lots of fun trying to find records. I have found that Syver Bergslien has a death record in Springfield, Illinois. Approximately 200 miles South of my home. I am planning a trip to go get the certificate and i hope it tells me where he is buried.

Can anyone translate the following three into English please?

I have tried Google as well as several other translation programs. Google and others are very good but there are many words, that I assume, there is no literal translation for. Often times words alone in differing languages have no literal translations and have to be translated in context. This is why Arna Kristin Johansen's suggestion is VERY good. It is a translation that takes word in the genealogical context prior to translation. I am certain there will still be words that can only be translated by a human brain given context and source but any dictionary help is much appreciated.
