Can I change wording in FTM 10 reports?

Legg inn av Ron Head » 28. november 2004 kl. 21.38

I posted this a few days ago, but got no response at all--is the question
not clear, or does no one have any suggestions to offer? I'd really like to
get rid of this annoyance, as trivial as it may seem!

**********************************************************
I've been using FTM through several versions (currently version 10), but
have never figured out how to correct something that annoys me when I create
reports of various types (register, ahnentafel, etc.).

For example, say I'm dealing with a couple named John Elmo SMITH and Martha
Irene JONES (who were known as Elmo and Irene). When I create a report
which lists their children, FTM words the introduction to the listing of
their children in the report as follows:

"Children of John SMITH and Martha JONES are:" [leaving out the middle names
by which they were known!]

Is there any way to force FTM to use the ENTIRE names of individuals in
these situations as the default?

The question was clear, just surprising. I don't see how anyone who
has used FTM for any length of time would ask this, as it's pretty
obvious that this isn't an option that FTM gives you. I see two
alternatives for you..... either switch to another program, or suggest
a programming change to the makers of FTM. Of the two, you'd be much
more likely to achieve success with the former.

Perhaps you could name them as Elmo (John Elmo) SMITH and Irene (Martha
Irene) JONES ?

Wouldn't a simple answer like "FMT doesn't offer that option", minus the
personal put down, be sufficient?

It wasn't a personal put-down, but an opinion. But if you thought it
was, why did you repeat it in your post?

A third alternative to try would be to use a non-displaying space
character instead of an ordinary space to separate the two given names
so that FTM might then consider them to be one word.

I haven't tried this as my computer isn't infected with FTM.

A non-displaying space is <alt>0160 using the numeric keypad.

I didn't see your original. I have all versions of FTM from 11 back to 1,
except I seem to have lost 2 - I may never have had it as I came across V1 on
a magazine cover disk and may have first bought 3. Generation reports came in
with V4 and it and all subsequent versions have shown entire names for all
flavours of generation report and I don't know any way of stopping it!

I use v. 9 and most reports include the full name each time it is used,
including alias if it is selected under the "Contents" drop-down. The
"Descendants of" report gives the full name the first time it is used
but shows only the first and last in later occurances. As the first and
following uses are usually very close together in the printout I don't
see this as a major disadvantage.

On closer reading of the OP I see that that is precisely what he was
complaining about and it *is* the same with me. I don't see it as a problem
as they are immediately below the original full names, both in the marriage
description and any 'More about' entries.

Would it perhaps help if you were to copy the text and paste it into a new
"Word" file for example. You could then do as I do and make any changes you
want before printing it out.

That won't work, those genealogy reports are graphics, not text.

No, the reports are not graphics. In fact, you can export them as RTF
files. From there you can copy or edit them as you please.

I use FTM version 9 and have always managed to copy (via edit) every report
and then paste into MS Word. Try it and see if you can do that too. It is a
very useful solution to the problem described.

Hope it works for you, and incidentally it also works with the family trees

Some FTM reports such as Ancestor Tree are indeed graphics. You
indeed CAN edit them using Powerpoint. You have to do a lot
of "ungrouping".
