My father, Sam Wigdahl, came to the United States with his parents, the Jens Wigdahls, when he was eight years old. They came from Wigdahl Sogn, Norway and settled at Petersburg, North Dakota where they operated a hotel for many years.

Dad married Amanda Overland and they had two children, Clara and Alfred. I do not know any details about his first wife, but after she died he married my mother, Louise Valde. She came to the United States from Sangshipso Island, Norway as a young lady, her sister and a friend came with her. They had friends in the Petersburg area. Mother homesteaded in what is now Burke County. My mother's sister and friend returned to Norway as they found too many hardships in the new land and all of their friends and people were back there.

Mother had three children, Johnny, Agnes, and me; she died when I was born. Mrs. Svend Walseth took care of me for a couple of years. When Dad married again, they took me home again, he had promised my mother he would keep us all together. Mrs. Martin Sathre wanted to adopt me as she had been a good friend of my mother and did not have any children of her own at the time. Walseth's did not have any children at the time they took care of me but a son was born later.

Sam Wigdahl homesteaded in Thorson Township, NW1/4-34. Anna Haugerud, his third wife, homesteaded in Thorson Township, E1/2NW1/4 and lots 1 and 2. She was born in Appleton, Minnesota.

In 1905, Sam was a breeder of thoroughbred shorthorn cattle and Berkshire hogs. In earlier years he had been a railroad brakeman, road boss, deputy, and schoolbus driver.

The Jens P Wigdal I found the in the 1920 census is married to "maybe" Christa??..I think Christa is about 74 (the census is so hard to read)...
Both husband and wife immigrated from Norway in 1886...
their son living with them was born in North Dakota (about 1888 I guess!..since he is 32)

Bristol: The funeral for Eric Bratsveen will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church, Britton. Reverend Terry Sletto will officiate. Spring burial will be in the Britton Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Price Funeral Chapel, Britton, and one hour preceding the funeral at the church on Wednesday. Eric died Friday, March 27, 2009, at Sanford Lake Area Hospital in Webster. He was 24 years old. Eric Louis Bratsveen was born May 11, 1984, at Britton to Louie and Sandra (Kann) Bratsveen. He attended school in Britton and graduated from Britton High School in 2003. During his school career, Eric had participated in chorus, golf, wrestling and football and was active in 4-H. He went on to study auto body repair at NDSCS in Wahpeton, N.D., for a year. For the next couple of years, Eric worked locally in carpentry and construction, first for Dave Siebels and later for Chad and Chris Fagerland. In 2006, he began studying diesel mechanics at Lake Area Vocational Technical Institute in Watertown, and graduated from there in 2008. While going to school in Watertown, Eric worked for Tractor Supply Company and Schweer Dairy. After completing his education, he worked for John Deere in Watertown, and the last two months had been employed at South Dakota Wheat Growers in Bristol. Eric was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church of Britton. He also was an active member of the Buckhorn Rodeo Association, and looked forward to the rodeo and their activities at Fort Sisseton each year. He was extremely gifted in using his hands, whether for welding, woodworking, carpentry or mechanics. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. Above all, Eric will be remembered for his winning personality, and the ability to meet and make friends with anyone. He had an amazing “gift of gab” and could talk to a fence post, if no one else was around! Grateful for having shared his life are his parents, Louie and Sandy Bratsveen of Britton; his three younger brothers: Adam, Lucas and Austin Bratsveen of Britton; his maternal grandmother, Joyce Kann of Britton; his paternal grandparents, Edwin and Edie Bratsveen of Kidder, and several special aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Merle Kann. Music for the funeral will be provided by Dorthy Jones, organist, and Josh Hawkinson, soloist. Casketbearers will be Chris Hastings, Kyle Hansen, Josh Irwin, Chris Fagerland, Chad Fagerland and Tom Schumaker. Honorary casketbearers will be all of the people whom Eric's life has touched. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Eric's name.
