Johan Nilsen, born 3 Nov 1839 in Moland
Hi,
I am not sure exactly where to post this. Johan Nilsen married in Holt, Aust-Agder on
on 18 Jan 1884. The marriage record says he was born in Moland, and confirmed in
Ostre Moland. Here is the marriage record (top of page):
Kildeinformasjon: Aust-Agder fylke, Holt, Ministerialbok nr. A 10 (1872-1885), Ekteviede 1884, side 303.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-299
I am lookinf for the birth or confirmation record for Johan Nilsen. His father is shown as Johan Nilsen on the marriage record, but I think it should be Nils Johansen.
Tusen Takk!
Brian

Hi Jon,
Yes, I know now that Johan Nilsen was married twice. Here is his first marriage:
Source information: Aust-Agder county, Holt, Parish register (official) nr. A 8 (1849-1860), Marriage records 1860, page 271.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-243
His first marriage says he was born at Jorumstad, Holt parish.
The 1865 census says he was born at Thromø parish.
His second marriage says he was born at Moland.
I can't find a birth record (1839.3.11) in any of those parishes!
Mvh,
Brian

Hi
Your Johan born in Arendal is not born Nov 3.
Both Johan and Nils/Niels/Nels are very common names.

Hi Vivi,
Yes, I see on the birth record that is was 11 March 1839. His second marriage record said
"1839 - 3.11 so I was not sure. Can you tell me what it says about his parents on the birth record? I know his parents, Anne Knudsdatter and Johan Nielsen were not married, but I can not read what it was by the names. Thank you!

Hi
We usually write day-month-year, but because the priest(?) started with the year he might have followd up with month and day. Then you get March 11, 1839. (None of the other dates are written like this.)
About the parents:
I am not able to read the word before his mother's name but the rest is: pige Anne Knudsdtr har udlagt som fader Garversvend(not sure) Johan Nilsen from Kongsberg.
(unmarried girl Anne Knudsdatter said the father was tannerjourneyman(not sure) Johan Nilsen from Kongsberg.)
After usual naming rules the boy's name would have been Johan Johansen.
Kongsberg is in Buskerud county.

Hi Vivi,
Thank you very much! I read that sometimes, if a man did not want to take care of a baby
born when he was not married, that the baby was given the exact name of the father to punish him. Maybe that is wha the son of "Johan Nilsen" was also called "Johan Nilsen".

Hi
LOL. That's new to me.
The confirmation of Johan might give the answer. However when looking through the confirmations I notice that several use the modern naming pattern with fixed surname.

Hi
I found his confirmation in Tromøy.
He uses Nilsen as surname and comes from Joranstad in Holt.
No 8: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-146
Seems like he is the correct Johan.

Re: Johan Nilsen, born 3 Nov 1839 in Moland
Hey Brian,
Johan Nielsen is my great-grandfather. I was very happy when I saw your inquiry, because I know too little about his family. I know that he was raised by his aunt and uncle here in Vrangesund, Arendal, in the same house where I grew up. He had three sons, I think, in his first marriage, and three daughters in his second marriage. The youngest of his daughters, Hilda, was born in 1895, the same year as he unfortunately died of yellow fever in Brazil. He was a captain of a sailing ship. I have a picture of him, which can be scanned if you want it.
His two oldest daughters emigrated to USA about 1910. My father, Johan, named after "our" Johan, visited Theresie and her family several times when he was in his twenties.
Do you know anything more about his family in Kongsberg? I have tried to do a research, and wonder if his parents were named Niels Danielsen and Anne Barbro Torgersdatter Graaner, but I'm not sure if I've found the correct information.
Sincerely,
Hilde
