Svarterud Farm Konnuerud - Nils Gulbrandsen

I have only just started researching my Norwegian ancestry, you see my dad was adopted at birth and I never knew my grandparents or any family on his side. I just found out names and places of people and am so excited to learn about my Norwegian heritage.

My great great grandfather was Nils Gulbrandsen who was born in 1839 in Modum (according to the 1900 census). He was married to Else Larsdatter who was born in 1842 in Ovre Eiker. They had 4 children: Gustav born 1865, Tollef born 1887 in Skoger, Nils Thorvald born 1891 in Skoger and Oscar (my g-grandfather) born 1882 in Skoger. I found a photo of their headstone on this website that says they had another child named Inga, and I had heard that Oscar had a sister named Ragnhild (sp?). I have found information about Else Larsdatter and her parentage but I have not had any luck with Nils Gulbrandsen. I can not find a marriage record for them, or any birth/death records for Nils. I also can not find any birth or death records for any of their children. I have a farm record 1886 that states they lived in Konnerud farm #79 which was called 'Svarterud' and the name of the domicile was 'Lorntzpladsen'. I am wondering if anyone can provide any information about the Svarterud farm or Lorntzpladsen, or any info about Nils.

I know this was a long post, sorry I am just so excited to finally be finding out who my family is/was. If anyone can help me at all I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it.

I'm not good in English, but try me a little.

In Skoger farm book it is told that Nils Gulbrandsen took over Lorentzplassen in 1876, bnr. 3 under Svarterud, gnr. 79 on Konnerud. He was born 1839 – 1906, maried Else Johanne Larsdatter, born 1842-1921. The widow sold the farm in 1910 for 4500,-kr.

To find baptism to children, we will have see Church book for Konnerud or Skoger in Buskerud.

Niels (and Else) listed here to born in Eker (Eiker). Niels fader: Gulbrand Nielsen. Else fader: Lars Christensen.

Presumably their first daughter, Gytha Mathilde was written into the church book to Houg Church in Eiker, 23 11 1862, who baptized the home of Lars Christensen Grøsland. She was born 29 August 1862 on Grøsland. Sponsors were: Mother, father, Karen Larsdatter residency Grøslandeie, Anders Larsen residency Grøslandeie and Carl Gulbrandsen from Modum.

I presume Gytha Mathilde must have died fairly young since she didnt appear on the 1865 census with the family.

Again, thank you so much. Now I get to go record all this information and start researching Grøslandeie farm and Nils' parents. Hopefully someday I will get to visit Norway and maybe even find some relatives.

They also got a daughter, Anna Mathilde born 17.06 1867 on Humlebæk (place in Holtefjell in Øvre Eiker). Baptized 28.07 1867 i Houg kirke i Eiker. ( Maybe also died fairly young ?)

Faddere was: Maren Haagensdatter Humlebæk, B…. ?? Christophersdatter Humlebæk, Nils Nilsen Humlebæk, Andreas Larsen Humlebæk and the father.

He was born 20.10 1882, baptized 26.11 1882 in Konnerud Church, which then belonged to Skoger sogn. (Today, Drammen)

Sponsors (faddere) were: Parents, Gulbrand Christophersen Hougen, "young man" (ungkar) Gustav L. Nilsen Lorentsplassen, girl Anna Nilsdtr. Lorentsplassen.

I can't give me, for on the same page I came across a daughter by Nils and Else Johanne, which have first communion (konfirmasjon) 08.10 1899.

Nikoline Elise Nilsdatter born and live in Lorentsplassen in Konnerud. Listed as: Born 16.11 1884. Baptized 21. 01 1885. Vaccinated 07.07 86. Grade (rated): very good.

As I started to post with. I am not good in English, but wanted to try me a little. One thing is to read English, something else is writing. It is the clearly more that mean, for now I'm getting mail from a member, wishing that I translate and inserts the information he has.

When I had to smile, for this is my first post in the forum in English. Time is enough to admit that I write everything in Microsoft Word and use the translation program. And it looks fine then. Have today many "after" family on Konnerud. Got all the kids at Dambråtan.

Have checked: Nils Torvald born 7 October 1891 on Mælen in Skoger. He is not the children of Nils and Else, but grandchildren. He is the son of Anna Mathilde Nilsdatter and Nils Thorsen, Lysagereie, Krogstadelva, Nedre Eiker born 21 October 1866, baptized 3 March 1867 in Nedre Eiker. Parents are Thore Halvorsen/Kristine Gabrielsdatter Temteeie.

Inga dead 9 august 1952 on Dambråtan.

Tollef marrying again in June 1956 with Petra Marie Wold Antonsen born 8 January 1892 on Jevnaker.

Tollef died on Dambråtan 28 november 1979, buried 5 December 1979.

When it comes to your grandfather, Oscar, I think it's he I find in the list for emigration. He is unmarried in 1910. Buy ticket 16 May 1910, traveling to New York with the boat "Olav" 17mai 1910. Born in Skoger.

Thank you also to Jørn for the information you posted as well. I had no idea that Nils was the son of Anna Mathilde. Do you by any chance know if Inga was the daughter of Nils and Else or was she a grandchild? I have not been able to find a birth record for her yet.

Thank you both again, it has been such a puzzle, putting all these pieces of information in as well as help I have gotten in the Modum forum. Now I am just putting it all in my tree and trying to find out if any relatives are still in Norway today, and where.

In a previous post gave Jørn Bjerkseth a tip that the tomb of Nils and Else Gulbrandsen still stands on Konnerud cemetery in Drammen (formerly Forests). Search in DIS tombstones in Norway gave me this result.

Else used probably not his middle name Johanne since it is not at the grave support. She is born Larsdatter, but took the surname of her husband Gulbrandsen. (Which began to be common in Norway at this time).

Tollef Nilsen born 30 Sept. 1887. He marries Inga Johansen Springover. Inga you wondered about was the daughter of Nils and Else can be this Inga who was married to Tollef and used his surname Nilsen.

I had actually found the photo of the grave a couple of weeks ago. It is what made me join the forum here, and thankfully I did because I have met such wonderful people who have helped me so much.

Thanks for clearing up the Inga thing. It makes sense now that she would be Tollef's wife.

I do plan to visit sometime, not right away though. It is quite expensive for tickets lol. I did actually email some people who work for the cemetery district and they gave me the name and address of the person caring for the grave. Someone on my other thread called him for me and got me his email address. I have emailed him a few days ago and am now just waiting for a response. Hopefully he knows of family I still have there since sadly all of my norwegian family here in the US has died.
