Karl Jacobsen, b 1855, to New york 1892
Karl Jacobsen / Carl Otto Jakobsen Hinden/ Hindeneie, born November 12, 1855 in Øvre Langvasslien, Næs in Akershus was my great-great grandfather. He went to America (New York, Raffel HP?) May 7, 1892. Ship: Kong Ring. He is not found on Ellis Island.
Anyone who knows about his faith in America?
1. When did he die?
2. Family in America?

His father's correct name was Jacob Edvard Nilsen, born approx. 1826. I think this is a 1865-census inaccuracy. In all other documents I've seen his name is Karl Jakobsen. Some times spelt with a 'c'.

Where did his wife die and when? Exact date? Did you read the Churchbooks to see if it shows him leaving the Parish?

His wife Olava Larsdtr Ullern died in Sør Odal, Norway May 2, 1894. On Karl there is a comment "to America two years ago" (or something like that!). I've been looking, but I haven't been able to find him under "Udflyttede" from Sør-Odal, e.g. when he left the Parish.

Before you discount him, my husband has two great uncles that came over from Norway in the 1880's. Their names were Niels Erlandsen and Amund Erlandsen. When they came to the USA, they changed their names to Johnny Ring and A.E. Holm or Edward Holmer. Perhaps they were running from the law in Norway? I would think your Carl/Karl Jacobsen/Jakobsen maybe was running from his family? It is something to think about.

Re: Karl Jacobsen, b 1855, to New york 1892
Thanks a lot!
It is not unlikely that he ran away from his family, to put it that way!
Apparently he had an affair with my great-great grandmother Karoline Andersdatter (1856-1905) as my great-grandmother was his illegitimate daughter. ("Uægte")
As I may read from expressions used in the Churchbooks they were also quite poor when living in Sør-Odal.
There are also story about his family from Næs/Nes, indicating that the respect for law and order e.g. in general was somewhat lacking...
Still just speculations, maybe hard to prove?
Is it possible to find out when your "Carl Wing" died?

Hei Margit og Jan Rune!
The fellow that Margit found, I also found (I think!) in the 1910 census in Washburn, Springbrok.
Carl Wing, age 45, immigrated 1892, and married to Lucy (age hard to read)..she was born in Ohio.
Carl is now a farmer...he was a "laborer" in the 1900 census. Lucy and Carl were married about 1902.
They have no children.
In the 1910 census it "says" it is Carl's first marriage, but Lucy's second marriage.

Re: Karl Jacobsen, b 1855, to New york 1892
Hei Margit!
The Carl in 1900 is age 35 (the year of birth I think was written incorrectly? as 1855)...the actual census says he is age 35. Then there could be the problem that someone wrote the YEAR correctly, but calculated his age wrong...!?
So I think the Carl in 1900 and the one in 1910 "may" be the same...
Do you agree?

No I cannot agree. It clearly states on the census record that he was born Nov 1855. So it could be either way.

Re: Karl Jacobsen, b 1855, to New york 1892
Thanks a lot so far folks!
I have been double-checking Carl's birth & confirmation. It seems like correct DOB is October 12, 1855. (Not November). He was confirmed Oct 8, 1871 & vaccinated against small pox Jan 6, 1862. His confirmation performance was stated "Well" (Godt)
Does this make any difference?
(Sorry for the inaccuracy...)
