Confusing entry.

Hilmar Eriksen's book of 1962 describes the children of Hans Olai Mikkelsen and Erika Pedersdatter as being 15 in number 5 adopted.

One of the real sons was Magnus Bertin Hansen with this entry

h) Magnus Bertin Hansen f.1874 reiste til sjos (went to sea) , dod i England. Enke (widow)Mikol Christoffersdtr f.1841.

Does this mean he was married to someone thirty years older - this is very odd.

I took a fast look in FT 1875, and some churchbooks for Ibestad.

In FT 1875 Mikol is listed as a widow.

Mikol Christoffersdatter b.1841 Ibestad b 1 1 widow
Christianna Olsdatter b.1873 Ibestad her daughter

Christianas father is Ole Bertin Olsen b. 1847

Oct 6 1871 Mikol marries Ole Bertin (Bertinus?) Olsen

Oct 19 1876 Mikol marries Kornelius Hansen, Ibestad church

I still find this very confusing. The text implies that Magnus left a widow which is strange.

Further down it says,

Enke Mikol Christoffersdtr f.1841

It then lists the last child of Hans and Erikka , Marie

i)Marie g i Bergen med Frederick Joachimsen - this is correct .

Hans Olai's kone konfirmerte 15 barn.

There were 10 natural children then , two died, Five fostered (Adolf Klevstad, Olivia Johannesen, Christianna, Ole and ??

This is one of the biggest families in Astafjord!!

Hilmar Eriksen did a great job collecting information for his two books, but he would draw conclusions and make guesses, and quite a few were wrong. This is probably one of his wrong conclusions. If you check church registers you will most likely not be able to find a marriage between Mikol and Magnus Bertin simply because there never was a marriage between these two.

Some of the information is very good. The only thing I disagree with is the part I need most concerning Hans and Erikka namely that Magnus is alledged to have had a widow.

He did have a widow in Wales called Margaret Anne or Anne Margaret in Norway. I don't know where his info came from?? Who did he ask?? Where did he go??

It's very difficult coming from England to know where this story came from - it almost certainly didn't come from family.

The book does not say when Magnus left for England. He did military service 1896-7 but is difficult to trace afterwards. As a rule he is difficult to pin down.
