Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
I am looking for information on the Bratrud farm for a distant relative. In the 1865 census at Bratrud lives Harald Olsen, 10 son of Ole Olsen (~1828) and Toren Olsdatter. Harald left Norway in 1879 or 1880. He married Kari Alfsdatter from Lestrudlien whose parents are Alf Alfsen (~1827) and Kari Iversdatter (~1833).
I am having difficulty finding the correct baptism for all. If there is any information that might be in the bygdeboks or someone can direct me to ancestors and possible years of birth or marriage, it would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
David Vinge

Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Thanks. I have the baptisms of Harald and Kari but am having difficulty with finding the correct baptism for Harald's father, Ole Olsen. According to the 1865 census, he would be 38 on his next birthday which makes 1828 but at his marriage in 1850 he is 23 which makes 1827. In those years there are many Oles born to Ole Olsens (from marriage record) but I don't know who his mother is so can't tell. Also I don't remember seeing any Ole that was born at Bratrud but they could have moved.
Is there a bygdebok of Sor Aurdal?
Thanks for your time and efforts.

Hi,
There are bygdebøker of Sør Aurdal and these two should cover Bagn:
Valdres bygdebok, band 1, Gard og bygd i Sør-Aurdal. Band A
Reinli and Vestre Bagn. Author: Jon Ola Gjermundsen, editor Ivar Aars. 1987. 730 p
Valdres bygdebok, band 1, Gard og bygd i Sør-Aurdal. Band B
Kyrkjebjørgo, Øystre Bagn, Leirskogen, Dølve and Hølera. Author: Jon Ola Gjermundsen, editor Ivar Aars. 1988. 743 p
Band = Volume
There are two additional volumes of Sør Aurdal, volume E and d both edited by Ivar Aars.
Valdres Historical Association, the website is bilingual
http://www.valdreshistorielag.no/index.htm
I guess there are quite a few Ole Olsen to choose from so, I hope there is some additional information to be found in the bygdebok.
Have a look at the Norwegian naming tradition and se if you are able to figure out what is most likely to be Ole Olsen’s mother’s name. Another tedious task is to look trough all the witnesses/sponsors to the baptism of Ole and Tøren’s children, the grandmother might be one of the witnesses/sponsors.
This is an article regarding naming tradition I’ve previously translated:
Norwegian naming traditions
Previously it was very common to name call the children after family members. If the tendency is as visible to day it is hard to tell due to the fact that the statistic is not that good in this department. However, the tendency shows that there has been a substantial decrease in this tradition over the past centennial. Before 1900 up to 60 % of the boys and 50 % of the girls where named after their grandparents and 20-30% named after their great grandparents. Today the numbers are down to 10-15 % of all newborn are named after their grandparents and less are named after their great grandparents. On the other hand has the naming after uncles and aunts has increased a little, in the old tradition shouldn’t mom and dad’s siblings name be used, unless if they had the same name as the child’s grandparents or great grandparents.
This goes for naming the exact name. Name calling with names that are similar or just start with the same letter are more common today than 100-150 years ago, at least regarding naming after its parents, something that was unthinkable in the 19th century.
At that time they had strict rules that were common in most places in the country.
1st son should be name after the paternal grandfather and the 2nd son after the maternal grandfather and the 3rd after one of the great grandparents and eventually the 4th, 5th, 6th after the other g. grandparents. The 1st girl should be named after her paternal grandmother and the 2nd girl after her maternal grandmother and then the next girls will be named after their g. grandparents. However, there is one special variation that might occur, the girl that the parents meant should be the last child they get was named after its mother, superstition would have it that if they named the child after the mother they would not have more children.
Reason fro name calling
One have to go a long way back in time to find that superstition were the background for these traditions. However, for centuries the believe wasthat the ancestors qualities was transferred to the child if it was name called, that only goes for the good qualities, those qualities that “stayed behind” after the deceased. Still further back in time there was a perception that the deceased would be offended if no one was named after them and they would harm the baby. At that time there was an illness fatally to newborn called “love” which according to Old Norwegian folk tale was due to angry ancestors not being name called. Later on the name calling was seen as one way honoring the deceased ancestors or if they were still a live a thank you for what they meant and have given to the next generations (and maybe to ensure that the grandparents would contribute more to the grandchild’s future)
Today these are probably the main reasons for name calling the children after grandparents and g. grandparents.
Another phenomenon from the early the 19th and early 20th century is that if one child dies young, the next child of same sex will get the same name. Sometimes a newborn would be named after a newly decease family member who had died at the time the baby was born. Only then naming after uncles and aunts was acceptable. Another funny tradition is if a widower got a new wife, the first daughter would be named after his previous wife. The same if a widow got married, the first son would be named after her previous husband.
It was only in the early 20th century that boys could be name called after their grandmothers or great grandmothers. For instance Karl was named after Klara and Andor after Anne. Girls on the other hand got male names and the ending –ine or –a like: Hansine, Jensine, Olava. That was usually younger daughters who were named after grandfathers and great grandfathers if it looked like they would not get any sons.

Arna Kristin

Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Thanks so much for the information and translation. I had read and learned from my family's ancestry about the naming practices but there were a few that I didn't know about.
I will try to find out how to get a hold of the bygdeboks.

Hi,
You could try your local library to se if they could get hold of them via interlibrary loan. If not we’ll just have to hope someone drop’s inn on this thread that happened to have a copy…
…if I got time I’ll check with my local library they should have a copy but not sure if it’s available.
Do you have the names of Harald’s siblings? I just found two on FS and then there is one more on the 1865 census.
In addition to Harald there is two named Ole one born in 1851 and the other in 1853.

Mange tusen tukk! I think that is how you write it. My grandmother would say that sometimes for the littlest gift or deed done for her.
There is so much information I'm not sure when I will get it into my data - work gets in the way! My relative will be very pleased to get so much information. They had some of it but there was problems with the Ole Olsens and too many of them to figure out which one was which.
I might have been able to get the bygdebok but never to translate it.
Thanks again. What great information!

Arna,
You are a never ending source of information! Thank you so much. If I ever get to Norway, I will have to look you up and thank you in person. What a wealth of data. I'm hoping that you have not spent too much time translating but probablly have. I could never have done that!
Thanks again

Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Arna,
I was wondering what "hides" mean or how they are used?
Pension to Tore and Siri according to a contract of 1782 was the use of part of the farm counted for 2 hides a summer mountain dairy farm (seter) half of a field of hops and a field of cabbage.
Other places:
...given a relative value in the land registry system” at the same time at 7 hides
...handed over to Andreas Hanson Jukam 3 hides in the Leisterud farm that he had bought in 1804
...Ola Aslakson withheld 2 hides in the places Smedsrudlie and Midtlie and paid the rest in cash,
...The landed property consisted of 10 hides in Austegarde, 5 hides in Kollsgard and ½ a hide in Bjødalssetre.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Hi,
He, he… I was afraid you would ask about that. I find this very complicated and thus not easy to translate, this is some old measurements that I have had some difficulties too grasp myself.
Anyone out there – correct me if I’m wrong about this.
It is a valuation of the farmland and prospective income for taxation purposes.
Matrikkelskyld = rural land tax
Prior to 1838 it is common to measure in hides, barrels of grains or fish depending on the production on the farm. In principal the valuation was equal to the amount of abt 1/6 of the production.
1 hide= 12 calf hides
1838-1886
Skylddaler, ort and skilling – 1 sylddaler=5 ort; 1 ort=24 skilling
1886-1980
Skyldmark and øre: 1 skyldmark=100 øre
Converter:
1 hide = 4 skylddaler
1 skylddaler = 2 skyldmark
Luckily, I finally found an English article, so I hope this will make more sense…
Norwegian farms – some background information, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na27.html
Matrikkel – Land records, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/matrikkel.html
Kår = pension, retirement agreement
Copied from http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm
Kår: support received after giving one's estate to another [When a son took over the farm (with all responsibilities) usually some sort of agreement was made with his parents. One part of the agreement was how his parents should be taken care of. Depending on the size of the farm they could be well off or not. One (or more) cows, some sheep, flour, potatoes etc. per year, plus somewhere to live on the farm. Some money per year might be in the deal as well, and in some cases one or two of the people working on the farm were designated to the older couple - often part-time. Often the older ones had to move into a "kårstue / kårstugu". "Stugu" = house, smaller than the main house. The young wife took over the responsibilities in the house, including the running of servants etc. and all the keys from the older wife. The takeover could be done early or late in the people's life. For some "oldies" it was nice to leave the responsibilities to a young, thrifty couple, while in other cases the old husband and his wife stuck to their rights as long as possible. For such a young couple, living with parents and father/ mother in law year after year without much to say, the quality of life and marriage might suffer a lot!
Hope this clarified some of your questions.
David, I have one question for you regarding genealogy in Canada.
I’m trying to find out what happened to my grandmothers 1st husband who after the divorce he emigrated to Canada in 1927 and he died in 1982, in Montreal. He had no contact with his ex-wife or two daughters so I’m just curious if there possible to figure out something about his life and where he’s buried. Rumors say that he was in the fur trade/hunter and lived/married to a native Canadian and as far as we know he did not have any children in Canada.
…any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Arna Kristin
He, he… I was afraid you would ask about that. I find this very complicated and thus not easy to translate, this is some old measurements that I have had some difficulties too grasp myself.
Anyone out there – correct me if I’m wrong about this.
It is a valuation of the farmland and prospective income for taxation purposes.
Matrikkelskyld = rural land tax
Prior to 1838 it is common to measure in hides, barrels of grains or fish depending on the production on the farm. In principal the valuation was equal to the amount of abt 1/6 of the production.
1 hide= 12 calf hides
1838-1886
Skylddaler, ort and skilling – 1 sylddaler=5 ort; 1 ort=24 skilling
1886-1980
Skyldmark and øre: 1 skyldmark=100 øre
Converter:
1 hide = 4 skylddaler
1 skylddaler = 2 skyldmark
Luckily, I finally found an English article, so I hope this will make more sense…
Norwegian farms – some background information, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na27.html
Matrikkel – Land records, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/matrikkel.html
Kår = pension, retirement agreement
Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Thanks again, Arna. I've been on holidays and now back to my genealogy work. I will read that article and hopefully it will make sense to me. Taxation!! It would be hard to make a living back then and then taxed. Some things never change.
Re: Bratrud and Lestrudlien farm
Oops, went back to reread the information and saw your query about your grandmother’s first husband. In Canada there are pretty strict rules (Freedom of Information Act - FOIP) and the only way that I know how to find out about his death is to go to the obituaries in a newspaper. You might be able to go to the Quebec Vital statistics and if he is a direct ancestor and you can find the proper documents they may give you information. I’m not sure about all this.
This gives some information.
http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/cert ... y-act.html
If you know the date and place, you could check the Montreal newspapers for obituaries but I don’t think they are online.
Quebec
In Quebec, the civil registers of births (baptisms), marriages and deaths (burials), which date from 1621, were duplicate copies of the church registers. All of the pre-1900 records can be consulted at each of the nine regional offices of Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.
Those registers were microfilmed by the Family History LibraryTM and are available through that institution.
Records dating from 1900 are in the custody of the under-noted office:
Ministère de la Justice
Directeur de l'état civil [www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/default.html]
2535, boulevard Laurier
Sainte-Foy, QC
G1V 5C5
A general index for marriages and deaths that occurred in the province of Quebec between 1926 and 1994 was prepared by the Société de généalogie de Québec. It is available on CD-ROM and can be consulted in many genealogical societies and libraries.
I will look up the name for you at ancestry.com as there is a database done for this time period I think. Let me know the name and I will search
Let me know if I can help.

Re: Austegarden bruk II page 281 , Bøle ??
At first I thought there was a mistake but upon researching, I find that there seems to be two sons named Ole/Ola, one born in 1762 and one in 1757. Am I correct? And I believe they married two sisters!! Ingri and Ingeborg, respectively! Is there any information about the children of Aslak Olsen Hølle and Marit Olsdatter Ohlmus? Marriage?
Any answers or direction anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
