Good genealogists have completely failed to find any trace of anna bredvold who emigrated in 1896. She literally disappears in 1896 - can anyone solve the puzzle. Relevant information is here:


Anne Kathrine Marie Hansdatter moved from Ibestad to Tromsø in 1881 and then to Trondheim and emirated to USA in 1896, see record #250 (

I'm trying to find record of Anne Hansdatter Bredvold born 18 May 1859 Bredvold, Ibestad, Troms. She emigrated to Spokane Falls in 1896 she doesnt appear on the 1900 census can anyone find out if she got married befoire 1900 and if so who to??

Her daughter Olevia Johannessen may have joined her in 1911 - any help to find her would be greatly appreciated.

There is quite a bit of information in Washington State. Anne's sister, Hanna lived in Tacoma Ward 3 from about 1887. She was married to Tollef Pedersen. She was in Washington till 1938 approx. She is buried there. My great grandfather was photographed in Washington (Tacoma) between 1902 and 1904. This might account for Spokane.

Anne had a contact: Alf Breivoll (born 8Feb 1886 Ibestad)who kept in touch with her in America. He visited Breivoll in 1916 from America -In 1916 he also left Trondheim on the Hellig Olav going to New York. He stated his destination was Westwood, California. He may/may niot have gone there. In 1917 he enlisted for the First World War - in Des Chutes Oregon (available on ancestry). I can't find him in WA at ll. His home is still a mystery.

Anne is most lkely married between 1897 and 1900. Her sister Marie emmigrated 1897 married c.1898 Bgen. Anne was born 1859 - she is number two in your list.

Her daughter Olevia called herself Johannessen when she left Norway in 1911 for Des Moins, Iowa. It's difficult to read the border crossing Canada to USA - can you take a look at it. I think she is visiting "Uncle Joakim Joachimsen" - if that is true that fits I am asking the family Joachimsen if they have contact in Des Moins, Iowa.


I'll have to "assume" you had the below, I didn't and had to look for research purposes.

The 1865 Norwegian Census had two Anna's living on a Bredvold farm in the Ibestad parish, of Troms. I did not do further research in the Parish records to see which one was born on May 18.
--The first, Anna Lionora Hansdatter, age 7, dau of Hans Lagesen, age 46, and Maria Andreasdatter, age 43

The purpose of above is to establish her family. The reason is to identify why she was headed to Spokane (Falls). Norwegian emigrants usually had a family member or a "sponsor" to whom they traveled. She being female "probably" had a reason to go to Spokane, other than the GREAT PACIFIC NORTHWEST...But, then that in itself is a good reason.

Do you know to whom she traveled or why Spokane?

The Norwegian Digitalarkivet has her emigrant information from Trondheim, leaving 14 Sep 1896 to Spokane (Falls) on the Thingvalla line, via the ship "Xania". Appears to be traveling alone, although there are others from Thjem enroute to Chicago (Bøe family, Oline 50, Halvar 15, Otilie 11, Eivin 9)

I did find a passenger list for the Bøe family on the Thingvalla, arrived New York on October 3, 1896. Just above their names is a first name that is slightly crossed out, and a last name somewhat unreadible. But, it appears to be Anna H. Bredvold, age 37, enroute to Spokane Falls. The Thingvalla did have transmigration routes to Hull, England; but also did the transatlantic voyage.

I looked for an Ann*, born Norway, born plus/minus 2 years of 1859 in the 1900 census, without success. There were several matching basic criteria, but no exact matches.

Her name being patronymic, she could have used the Americanized/Angelicanized "Hansen", or stayed with her patronymic farm name of "Bredvold". She appears to have used this name from at least the census of 1865 to her emigration in 1896. But, what name did she adopt in the USA? Anna being such a common name, she probably kept that as most Scandinavian's did keep their first name, if common.

Help would be a family member known to be in Spokane, or other "family" information. I did not research Olevia Johannessen. If you have specific information on her, it might help.

You have a bigger problem if you are discounting a census record because of a month of birth. Half the time the months are wrong and I have found the years of birth wrong up to 10 years in records and it is the right person.

I would suggest you start ordering death certificates, marriage certificates and try to find more information. For your information, Any census other then 1900 that gives 1859 for a birth year, usually means and is that they are born in 1858. That is just the way it is, as it is ca or born about. It also depends on who in the household, or building where they lives answers the question.

Actually you have her birthdate wrong, if you look at her baptismal/christening record, you will see that she was born on May 7th and baptized on September 18, 1859.

Yes, but that is the only thing we know for sure about where she was. Genealogy is based on facts only and that is why we need to be sure. I do feel though that it is her in 1900 census as there are two children there. That I am comfortable with. Did you check the 1906 and 1911 census for Canada?

I am very impressed with this. Well researched, well though out (sometimer lucky ie. Emma!!) this is an excellent response.

As you've done so well with anna can I point out that she had a missing daughter Olivia who went to Des Moines Iowa in 1911 from Norway - she was born 1880 Ibestad. Do you have any idea what might have happenned to her. She changed her name to Johannessen between 1900 (mentioned on census as Klevstad in Ibestad ) and 1911.

Hi Margit ,

My great grandfather Magnus Hansen was anne's youngest brother . He was born 1874 Ibestad, Troms. He did not survive a bad accident and died in 1908 - all information about his family wenty with him . He was married to Maggie Dare who went to Washington with him. She was Welsh so when Magnus died my grandfather was taken to Wales having grown up in Norway.

Hans Mikkelsen and Erika Pedersdatter had 10 children - 8 survived (they have taken a long time to research)

Organize the facts as you know them now. List Mother, Father, children, spouses, children with app. dates or dates if known and perhaps more information may be found. Where they were found in each census, death dates if found etc.

Or you can hire someone to do your genealogy for you.

It has taken me over 20 years to finally find where my great grandfather was born in Norway. I still have not found where his Mother is buried in Minnesota, but some day I will.

I've just been doing some research on associated members of Anna's wider family namely her nephew by Jens Hansen (anna's brother) Kristian Michelsen born 1901 Ibestad who emigrated to Tacoma Washington and became the pastor of the lutheran church. I was dismayed to find him in bTacoma Washington as pator of the lutheran church of Norway there - knowing this would have made finding Hanna , Anna's sister much easier.

Worse, I'm completely failing to find his son Kris michelsen born about 1935 Washington or Minnesota , who might have vital information about my grandfather . This line is important because they bought the farm in 1907 off of Anna's father Hans Olai Mikkelsen.

I have a letter from Kristian Snr. saying that his son was in Denver Colorado Can you find him?? I've lost him completely,

He actually knew earl who is on the census. That was freaky..

More he knew that Earl was adopted so that saves embarrasment later on.

And .. Earl had three children - Gary was Govenor of New Mexico twice.
