Jeg har fått kontakt med Kaare Bye i USA som skal hjelpe meg å prøve å finne bror til min bestefar. Kanskje jeg også kan få hjelp her?

Martin Pedersen Gylland, født 12,.januar 1889 reiste fra Trondheim med "Midnattsol" den 8. mars 1913 med kurs for USA. Det vi vet er at han kom til Watson i Minnesota.

Den videre skjebne er ukjent for oss, min avdøde far snakket mye om sin onkel uten at han også kunne fortelle hva hans skjebne ble.

Noe konkret har det ikke kommet ut av forespørselen jeg har gjort til Kaare Bye.

Jeg ønsker heller å få hjelp i dette forumet, som jeg syns er meget bra!

Det er meget merkelig at det ikke finnes noe spor etter Martin Pedersen Gylland etter at han ankom Portland i Maine den 24. mars 1913.

Men jeg regner med at noen også "over there" kan være behjelpelig med å komme videre.

Don't know if he is the fellow you are searching for...but some of the info "matches"...

I found the town, "Chisholm"(it is not Chrisholm)...it is near Hibbing, MN...not really near Duluth...north west of the city of Duluth.
I was trying to read the type of work Martin does...can anyone else read that word...does he work in "a cave"???...like you would do for mining?

But the info is from the 1920 US Federal census...Duluth, St. Louis county, MN...
Name used was Martin Petterson. Can you put the census image in here, from Ancestry?

So I can't see the names you have entered.
I wonder if "Heritage Quest" has indexed the spelling of Martin's last name different than Ancestry?
But, he is age 30 in 1920...his last name is indexed as "Petterson" in Heritage Quest.
He immigrated 1913.

This is strange, none of those in Ancestry are correct.

But I found him: Martin Pellersan is the spelling in Ancestry!

My understanding he is a laborer in a cave.

I guess sometimes it is good to compare census records in Heritage Quest with Ancestry...this is a perfect example....! I guess it depends on how clear the original writing is, in the census...and how that information is "translated" to the indexes!

So, now I am asking...does this Martin Petterson/Pederson "fit" Kjell's relative...?
Along with the info (birth date) provided in the WW1 draft, which Hanne Line provided...he sure seems like the right fellow!

He is probably in MN, Duluth also in 1930.

Ancestry has Martine Peterson, 40 y old, born in Norway. This is a man and Martine is female, hence the spelling is incorrect.

Forstår jeg det slik at Martin Pedersen Gylland (Pederson/Petterson) døde i 1929. Hvor kan jeg finne flere opplysninger om hans bortgang, og eventuelt hvor han ble gravlagt.

Det må være meget vanskelig å lete når folk tok et annet etternavn når de kom over til Amerika.

Hva var hans egentlige etternavn: Pederson eller Petterson ?????

The Minnesota Death index has recorded his name as "Martin Peterson" who died in Chisholm (St. Louis county) July 16, 1929. So I think that is the spelling that should be used "over here".

Torill...in the 1930 census that you found....is that person's profession (like miner), similar to the Martin Peterson living in Dulth in 1920?
The birth date (Jan 1889) on the WW2 record for Martin Pederson, really made me think the fellow who died in Chisholm in 1929 was the right person ...

I found one in 1930, probably the one we are looking for. But that has to be investigated more. Therefore at this stage, I would not totally rule out those deceased before 1930.

OK...the Martin Peterson in 1930...who is a cook...he immigrated in 1915.
I know the census is not always right...but that immigration year does not match the immigration year (1913) given by Kjell. So still a few "loose ends" here....

I do think ordering the Minnesota Death info may be helpful...and Kjell can do that himself!...with a credit card...order the one for Martin who died July 16, 1929.
Doesn't that make sense?

Det er ganske tydelig at han jobbet i en gruve i Chisholm da han ble registrert i den amerikanske hær i 1917, men etter det ..........................????????

is it possible we followed the wrong track (thread)...
I looked back at the immigration record that Torill provided...
Martin was headed to Watson, MN (in Chippewa co) to his friend Peder Gylland.
I find a Peter Gylland in Yellow Medicine County, Norman township in 1910, and he is about in the same location for the 1900 census. Peter was born March 1859...I suppose he came from the same area (or farm??) in Norway that Martin Pedersen Gylland came from. (Peter emmigrated 1889)..
Perhaps if we look for more info about Peter, we might find more about Martin??!!
I could not find Peter in the 1920 census...he was married (wife's name "randina"?) and had a daughter (?elenora?) born 1896.
Yellow Medicine is not even close to Duluth, MN...so perhaps we got off the track with the Martin Petterson we found living in Duluth...
Maybe Martin did not use the last name Peterson!!
Can someone find Peter Gylland in the 1920 census..or some of his family?
Just offering a few new ideas...don't know if this helps at all..

Peter Gylland and his wife, Randine are living in Eugene, Oregon in the 1920 census...
I just found them...they are with "cousins"...but I can't read their names...
So this does not get us any closer to Martin...unless he followed Peter to Oregon!
