Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
Help! For many months, I have been trying to find information about my Great Great Grandparents, Ottar/Otte Hansen and his wife Bertha.
From the Digitalarkivet, I was able to find a few records about Ottar/Otte. I think he was born on the Hammer Kambuas in Stjordal in November of 1841. His father was Hans Hansen (born in Skatval on the Riisholte farm in 1798) and his mother was Giertrud Andersdtr Lillelund (born in 1799 on the Hammer farm). Hans and Giertrud had at least six children (Malena, Mail, Anders, Sivert, Kirsti, and Ottar).
I think Ottar's wife was Bertha, and her last name may have been Lerfald. But I cannot find her in the Digitalarkivet.
Two sons of Ottar and Bertha were Peter (born in 1868) and Alex (born in 1873). Both Alex and Peter emigrated to the USA in 1890 after being endentured to the Norwegian navy for several years. Alex was my Great Grandfather, and he died in Anaconda, Montana, USA.
I would love to learn more about my Norwegian family, and possibly to make contact with some living relatives. Does anyone know how I might find more information?
I apologize for being unable to write in Norwegian!
Sincerely,
Holly Peterson

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
I have searched the bygdebook for Stjørdal, and I can`t find more than you already have. No wife is named for Ottar there. I can`t either find any Bertha on a Lerfald-farm.
I looked a little in several parish-books about any wedding for Otto and Bertha, but can not find it. I rather can`t find Otto in the 1865 records.
I recommend you to write a search in the Digitalarkivet debate-forum, (remember to place it on Nord-Trøndelag) There are many helpers there!
I can scan some pages from the Stjørdals-books if yoy want. Lillelund and Hammer.

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
But supposing we try to look a bit farther north in Nord-Trøndelag ?
Registered in the 1865 census is this family:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... k=443#ovre
Ottar and Berith/Bereth were married 3rd March, 1865 ( nr. 6 ) :
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-298,
and it appears that Berith is from LERFALDvald. Moreover, it appears that the father of this Ottar is Hans Ottarsen, not Hans Hansen. But it is possible that the mother of Hans Ottarsen is called Birrthe ( Berthe ) in the 1801 census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... =2811#ovre
Names being spelled in a more antique fashion in 1801
Now this may be altogether another family, but it would be conclusive if we could find the 2 sons Peter and Alex in the parish books.
However, my internet is terrible tonight, I will have to postpone any search for them.

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
anyway I did find that Berith Pedersdatter and Ottar Hansen baptised a son PETER in 1868:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... x_side=-34
in Frol ( Levanger Landsogn ) parish.
Looking at the link from 1865 census as quoted in my previous entry here, this census does not mention where the individuals were born. It is therefore quite possible that Ottar Hansen was born farther south, at Skatval parish in Stjørdal, as found by Gunnar.

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
well, I overlooked the fact that the names of the 2 mothers are different .... sorry.
If you know Peter's birthday in 1868, you will know whether this Peter baptised in Frol is the correct one or not, Holly. Is the birthday wrong, then the Skatval link is obviously the one to follow.

Hi
Have copied pages 487 and 488 from Stjoerdalsboka regarding Kambuaas, it looks that it is the same information you already have.

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
- Ottar and Berith, their oldest child Hanna Christine:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... x_side=-25
No. 7 on the page. From Vinne parish, Verdal. Two of the witnesses are from Lerfald.
Provided that the brothers Peter and Alex, who emigrated, had a sister by the name of Hanna ... Anyway I have found ( above ) that THIS Hanna had a brother Peter born in 1868.
It should have ben possible to find Alex or Alexander, a rare name at that time. But I have up to now not found any Alex(ander), son of Ottar/Otte, not in the Levanger/Verdal area and neither in the Stjørdal area farther south. Probably I have just overlooked him somewhere, and at least the Levanger/Verdal family seems to have moved around quite a bit. But do you know if Alex had an additional or possibly even alternative Christian name before arriving in the U.S ? I have also tried to check the emigrant lists for 1890 and a couple of years around, but up to now without finding Alex and Peter. There might of course be reasons for travelling as incognito as possible if they were evading the navy service
I think we can find that Ottar and Berith were living alone as per the 1900 census.
Finally, I did write previously that the 1865 census did not list the places of birth ... not so at all, I must apologize again !

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
You are not responding much, Holly, but you ask after information about living relatives.
This post has been edited according to the rules of Slektsforum and The Data Inspectorate because it contained information abdout a living person.
Innlegget er redigert av moderator, da teksten inneholdt informasjon om nålevende personer. Dette i henhold til Slektsforums og Datatilsynets reglement.
His father Ingemar are son of Eliseus Johnsen Hestsjøen or Husås, b. 2.2.1860 and Beret Pedersdatter Trælstadplass, b. 17.8.1862.
Eliseus Husås is son of Mali Hansdatter Kambuås (Hammer), b. 1.3.1832 and John Eriksen Hastad, b. 21.1.1835. Mali are sister to Ottar Hansen.
This is read out of Stjørdalsboka, and there are not much information later than 1940, but there are the newer Hegraboka, that cover the Hammer-area.
There are maybe many other relatives living. It is best that you self take contact with him.

Dear Knut!
I think you have indeed found my ancestors! I do not know the exact birthday of Peter except for the birth year of 1868, but his middle initial was "B"! Yahoo!!
Cheers,
Holly

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
dear Holly,
we all find pleasure in helping you getting some answers.
As mentioned above, I think we may identify the parents in the 1900 census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... =1083#ovre
living in the town of Levanger, Ottar being a fisherman.

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
Dear Knut, Gunar, and Ivar,
The Ottar Hansen and his wife in the 1900 census in Levanger MUST BE my Great Great Grandparents! I am so appreciative of your help, and I do not know how to thank you enough!
My family and I have always been proud to be of Norwegian descent, and because of your assistance, we now know much more about our Norwegian family tree. I know that I never would have found this information without your help.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Holly

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
Hallo! Hallo! Dear Knut,
You asked if Alex may have been given another name. We only know about the one -- Alex or Alexander.
BUT....
I found Ottar/Otter, Bertha/Bereth, Hanna/Anna, Peter/Petter, AND OLE living in Verdal at the Myren bustad (Gard 32) in 1875 (with Bereth's father Peder Pettersen). It lists the year of birth of Peter as 1867 (one year earier than 1868) and the birth year of Ole as 1871 (instead of 1872). I am quite confident now that Ole must be our Alex!
As for the source of the name Alexander? We know that Alex learned Russian dances when he was a boy on the naval ships. My theory is that he may have acquired the nickname of Alexander on the ships, so he kept it!
Yahoo!!!! Once again, I am so appreciative of your help!
Cheers,
Holly

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
Dear Holly and family,
here is a list showing births registered as per the Vinne churchbook, Verdal:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... stnr=61#a0
you will note that Ole Ottarsen was born 28th October and baptised 26th December, year 1871. His father then lived at LERFALDsvald. No other sons of Ottar were baptised in Verdal during the period around 1871. I therefore believe you are right, this must be your Alex.
The census details are of course not as reliable as the churchbooks, age information is
quite often rather varying.
These ancestors once established, you should be able to discover further ancestors backwards - I am sure some experts on the Verdal/Levanger/Skogn region may assist you if necessary.
Greetings
Knut Ragnar Ansnes

Re: Help! Ottar/Otte Hansen (b. 1841) and Bertha
Dear Knut!
YAHOO!!!! I just checked our records about Alex's birthday, and it is indeed October 28th!
For some reason, he reported his birth year in Amerika as 1872, but we ran into this exact same problem regarding my father's Norwegian father (where we were off 1 year for his birthdate also).
Is there some way I can thank you? If you give me your mailing address, I would like to send you a small gift of appreciation from Montana. I assume we are not supposed to give personal info in the forum, but maybe there is another way?
I never would have figured any of this out without your help, and without the Slektsforum.
Cheers,
Holly
