Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
Hei,
Can anyone tell me whether the house at Gamlegrænden 673 in Kongsberg still exists? I will be traveling to Norway next week and I am hoping to see the buildings where my family lived. My great-grandmother Josefine Sofie Gustava Jørgensdatter Thoresen was born there in 1859. Tusen takk for hjelpen me!

Re: Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
The hole area Gamlegrænden/Gamlegrendsåsen is now a residential area, and there are lots of house built from the 1970's up till today.
There are still a couple of the old farmhouses between alle the other new ones, but I don't know which one that is No. 673. And all the farms agricultural areas are gone.

Tusen takk Remi! I was afraid that may be the case. I have several other addresses, but I suspect all are gone. I am still looking forward to seeing the church where my ancestors were married. Thank you for your help.

Hi Robert.
Are you coming to Kongsberg between June 9th and June 15th? Or is it his week?
This week I don't work before saturday and sunday, and next week I'm off the hole week. I could show you around if you wish. It looks like it's going to warm and nice weather with the temperature in the upper 20's degrees Celsius. I can also try to find out more about Gamlegrenden 673 if you wish?

Hei Remi!
What a kind and generous offer you have made. Mange tusen takk! I will not get to Kongsberg until 20 Jun as I am also visiting other places first. I have a cousin in Hokksund who will be showing me around Kongsberg. Although we don't know what is still existent, it will be fun to visit the city. Yes, I have heard the weather is very warm. Let's hope I do not bring bad weather from the States to Norway when I arrive.

Re: Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
Remi and Robert!
Gamlegrænden is not the same as Gamlegrendåsen! Gamlegrænden was the area from Glitre (the museum) to Tislegård, between Kapermoen and the river. There are still some old houses in the area, so you might just be lucky, Robert
I have found at least two properties in the area that was owned be the "Jernverk". The addresses are
Glitregata 12 (Gr.nr. 8471-1, old Gr.nr. 1170)
and
Tislegårdsveien 12 (Gr.nr. 8528-1, old Gr.nr. 1246).
But none of these referes to any house number 673.
If we look in the 1865 cencus we find that Karen K. Moe owned house no. 672. And in the records we find that this is Kapermoen 1 (Gr.nr. 8545, old Gr.nr. 1228). This is not very far from Glitregata 12.
Hope this helps a little.

Re: Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
Hei Bjørg!
Thank you for this new information. Perhaps there is hope yet! I am also looking for other streets which may still exist.
Masovngaden (my 2nd ggrandmother was born there 1834)
Nytorvet (she died there in 1905)
Sandsværmoen (farm no. 177) - this is from the 1865 census
Lille Kirkegade 72a, 73, and 36a (this is from the 1900 census. I don't understand the numbers)
And you are correct that the Jernverk owned the property at Gamlegræden!
Hilsen,
Robert

Re: Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
Hei Robert!
You will perhaps take a look at this map:
http://kart.finn.no/
Then you can put the name of the city, Kongsberg, in "Søk" (which means 'search').
Then you can searh "Kongsberg (By)", upper left. By = city in the norwegian language.
"Nytorget" means "The New bazaar/market/square". You'll find Nytorget in Kongsberg city.
By the way, I've got ancestors in Sandsvær and Kongsberg, too
Hope this was a little bit help for you. Sorry my bad english.
Sincerely, Kristine

Hei igjen Robert.
Masovngata (gate/gaten/gata = street) still exists.
Lille Kirkegade (gade = older word (danish
) for gate/street) is not there now, but Kirkegata is. Kirke = church. Lille/liten = little.
God hilsen
fra Kristine

Hei Kristine!
I appreciate your help. The maps are very good. Perhaps I will find something after all. And your English is beautiful. I wish my Norwegian were as good.

Robert

Re: Gamlegrænden - Kongsberg
Hi Robert,
"Lille Kirkegade" is today called "Christian IV's gate", and the house you are seeking should be number 20. I believe there is an old house there
"Mønsterplass 737 365" is "Olavsgate 23". There are a lot of old buildings in that area, hope yours is still there
"Sandsværmoen 237 177" is "Sandsværveien 9". Lots of old buildings there too, but I don't know if it could be the same house as in 1865.
"Nytorget" and "Masovngata" still exists, as Kristine told you. Do you have any numbers for those houses? Or link to the cencus?
Back to your first question:
There are two alternatives for "Gamlegrænden 673". Both were the properties of the Jernverk, and I cannot find out where house no. 673 was located. The first address is "Tislegårdsveien 12". The second property has later been divided i 4, addresses "Gamle Gomsrudvei 19b, 21, 23 and 25". I don't think there are any old houses on the two properties, but I have not checked.
Have a nice vacation in Kongsberg/Norway!
