Descent From Edward III For Dowsabel Burton, heiress of Kins

Kinsley House is in the West Riding of Yorkshire, 7 miles SW. of
Pontefract. In the 15th century it was the seat of the Burtons, a
squirearchy family of little influence outside their locality. Henry
Burton of Kinsley (d. 1475) was the third son of his father Richard
Burton, but his two elder brothers died without issue. His wife was
Alice Pudsey (d. 1533), daughter, according to the 1530 Visitation
pedigree of the Burtons, of Sir John Pudsey of Bolton (d. 1492) and
Grace Hammerton. This marriage united the Burtons with many Yorkshire
gentry families.

The marriage of Henry's son and heir, Sir John Burton of Kinsley (d.
1537), united them with the Edward I bloodline in the person of his
first wife Muriel Bosvile (d. by 1525), a daughter of Thomas Bosvile
of Newhall, Yorkshire and his wife Isabel Hastings, who was of the
Hastings of Fenwick family and a descendant of Edward I. Sir John
Burton and Muriel Bosvile had five children: Thomas, William, George,
Muriel (who married Henry Everingham) and Elizabeth (who married -----
Brough of Newcastle). After Muriel's death, Sir John took a second
wife, Margaret Wentworth (d. 1540), a daughter of Matthew Wentworth of
West Bretton, and had further issue.

Sir John's son and heir Thomas Burton married, about 1520, Elizabeth
Yorke, a daughter of Sir Richard Yorke (1462-1528). The Yorkes were
an extremely successful mercantile family from the city of York.
Elizabeth's grandfather, the first Sir Richard Yorke (d. 1498) had
been both mayor and M.P. for the city, and was knighted by Henry VII.
Though the Yorkes had achieved the respectable status of urban gentry
by 1520, Elizabeth's marriage to Thomas Burton was likely aided by her
mother being either a sister or daughter of Thomas, Lord Darcy (d.
1537).

Unfortunately, the pedigree for the 15th-century descendants of Sir
John Darcy and Joan Greystoke is hard to trace, especially where
younger sons and daughters are concerned. It becomes easier in the
16th-century as the family regularly appeared for Visitations. Since
she had a granddaughter born in 1522, chronology favors Elizabeth
Darcy (d. 1557), wife first of Sir Richard Yorke (1462-1528), and
second of Sir Simon Harcourt (d. 1547), being the daughter of Sir
William Darcy (d. 1488) and Euphemia Langton, and sister of Thomas,
Lord Darcy (1467-1537). But since that granddaughter's first name was
Dowsabel, it's also possible, though chronology is very tight, for
Elizabeth to have been a daughter of Thomas, Lord Darcy and his first
wife Dowsabel Tempest, no doubt their eldest daughter, if not eldest
child, born about 1487. With the Yorke Visitation pedigrees stating
Sir Richard Yorke's wife was a daughter of Lord Darcy, plus the naming
of her granddaughter Dowsabel, I'm going to lean toward Elizabeth
Darcy, Dame Yorke being a daughter, not sister, of Thomas, Lord Darcy,
despite the tight chronology.

It also makes sense for Lord Darcy to take an active interest in the
marriage of his granddaughter Elizabeth Yorke. In 1511, he arranged
for his son and heir George Darcy to marry the heiress Dorothy Melton,
whose mother was a Hastings of Fenwick, so it is natural for his
granddaughter Elizabeth to marry some years later, Thomas Burton, heir
of Kinsley, and a cousin to Dorothy Melton.

Thomas Burton died before his father, so when the IPM of Sir John
Burton was taken in 1538, it returned his 16-year-old granddaughter
Dowsabel Burton, wife of George Mill, gentleman, as his heir. The
19th-century editors of the Visitation pedigrees could not uncover
what became of George Mill and Dowsabel Burton, but luckily Elizabeth
Darcy, Dame Yorke, left a will, and if her daughter Elizabeth and
granddaughter Dowsabel were still alive in the mid-16th century,
hopefully there will be mention of them in that document. In the
meantime, Dowsabel Burton's one line of descent from Edward III thru
Joan Beaufort is given below.

Just incidentally, Edward III's mother, Isabella of France, was
descended from the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus. She
was also descended from Harold II Godwinson, who died at the Battle of
Hastings. So anyone descended from Edward III also has descents from
Byzantium, as well as from King Harold II.

This descent of Edward III from Harold II was traced on Rootsweb Gen-
Medieval-L Archives by Alan B. Wilson,and by William Addams
Reitweisner and Frank Johansen and seems accurate.

Kiev. Vladimir II's mother was Maria/Irene/Anastasia Monomacha, the
daughter of Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus.
