Ole Maehle Trondheim & Namsos

I'm working on my family tree and I've just discovered that Ole Maehle (your famous painter) was borned in Namsos 1904 and was the son of Adélaïde Van Severen.
She is in my ancestry line. The Van Severen are originated from Belgium. Research on Internet gave me no answers about the birth and death place of Ole. His father (Johannes or Jean Maehle) seems to be borned in your town in 1880. Could you provide me any contacts throughout I can retrieve infos about this family? No ancestry sites on Internet can give me this important information for me...

In the Census of Namsos 1900:
Johannes Mæhle, born in 1878 in Kristiansund (Møre " Romsdal). He was working as a clerk at the post office in Namsos. His address: Havnegaden 39(Harbour street). Most likely his family came from Aure in Møre " Romsdal (not far from Kristiansund).

Thank you for this information! I've just found the correct Johannes from the Census 1900 of Kristiansund born in 1860 in Aure. His wife was mentionnned as Ane Fredrikke Maele has been substituted by Adélaïde van Severen (her real name)...
Could you tell me if the Census Data's can be found on an internet site?

Answer:
I guess this conclution is based on information I emailed you. The conclution I tried to state, but perhaps rather messy was the following.

The Johannes born 1860 in Aure is probably NOT the father of Ole Mæhle. He was prob. indeed married to a woman named Ane Fredrikke.

However the Johannes born 1860 has incorrectly been named as the father of Ole Mæhle and the husband of Adélaïde by another Norwegian genealogist.

... or have you found additional information supporting a different conclusion?

The Johannes Mæhle born 1880 Trondheim may well be the same as the Johannes Mæhle born 1778 Kristiansund, considering the reliability of this sort of data.

These are probably the parents of Johannes Mæhle b.1878 and three of his siblings.
In 1900 Ragnhild was widowed living in Kristiansand with two of her daughters (supported by her son!)

This is the original text coming up from the archieve of Brugge:

"After he was forced to leave Van Severen " C°, Charles Van Severen became the accountant or bookkeeper of the municipal hospital in Namsos. When he died in 1892, he had not amassed the fortune he had been dreaming of in his youth. His widow survived him and died well after 1900. At the time of his dead, only his elder daughter had married and she had given him and his wife six grand-children. With her husband Carl Frithjof Fjeldstad (1850-1925) she would have six more in the following years. The other children of Charles-Auguste also married. The only son had only daughters, which resulted in the extinction of the family name, although some of the descendants through women, kept the name in supplement to the one of their father, some received even the name Wieland as one of their Christian names. One of the children, Adelaïde Van Severen (a Christian name evoking the grandmother and the aunt from Bruges), had as her son Ole Maehle (1904-1991), who became a painter with an excellent reputation. He was an optimistic expressionist, painter of the Norwegian landscape, with bright colours in the style of Matisse. Amongst the other descendants of Van Severen one can find sea-captains, officers, bankers, salesmen, professors, teachers, etc. The offspring has become numerous. Until to-day they remain aware of their roots in Bruges."

I have to focus on : "the only son of Charles Auguste.." which should be Karl Andreas born in 1863??? Impossible for him to have a daughter born in 1875. In fact Charles Auguste has 2 girls named Adélaïde.

A simple lookup for Ole Mæhles christening in 1904/05 in the church records of Namsos would probably solve this. Unfortunately there is no way I can manage that at the time being.

Let's start at the beginning with your citation, Michel. The citation is not precise in its phrasing.

"Charles Van Severen became ..."
"At the time of his dead only his elder daughter ..."
"The only son had only daughters ..."
"One of the children, Adelaïde Van Severen ..."

The way I understand this, Adelaïde Van Severen is supposed to be the daughter of Charles and not the grand daughter of Charles.

I 'm in the passing years working for the danish company DANFOSS and have been several times in Danmark for meetings. I met my collegues and one of them was from Norway. I'm remember his kindly courtesy and logical intelligence.

Boka for Kristiansund er også brannskadd slik at det nok kan være tøft å finne Ole Mæhles opphav på det viset. Man må nok ty til nålevende personer for å bekrefte opphavet.

Fant ellers at van Severen navnet er i bruk i Namsos-traktene som mellomnavn.
