Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
Hei
Kontoret har fått denne henvendelsen fra Matthew Dymond, som leter etter tippoldeforeldrene.
Hi, my name's Matt Dymond and I was wondering if you would be able to help me out with a bit or a scavenger hunt in trying to find my great-great-grand parents family tree or any sort of information on them, as I have a bit of information about them, but my computing skills do not allow me to find the information I am after!
The facts that i know are that my family I am looking for were immigrants from Norway, and came by ship to New Zealand at about 1910. Names were Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen (Christiansen), who was about 21 at the time of his journey to New Zealand, and his wife/partner Jorgine (Jorgina) Marie Johansen. If the spelling isn't correct, only 1 or 2 letters will be out of place.
If you are able to get back to me with any information at [.....] (or even if you can't find anything), I would be extremely grateful and appreciate it very much.
Thanks for the help, Matt Dymond.
Kontoret vil sende eventuelle svar til ham!

Re: Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
Hi Matt,
In New Zealand Society of Genealogists’ burial locator we find:
Anton Sigvard Berg (Tony) Christensen dead 1969, 86 years old (born 1882/83) and Jorgine Marie (Gina) Christensen dead in 1872, about 82 years old (born around 1889/90). Both buried at Kelvin Grove Cemetery in Palmerston North.
So far, I have not been able to find any information about these persons in Norway. Do you have any indication of where in Norway they came from or any further information about them from New Zealand? Did they have any children?
Regards

Re: Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
Hello
Can find in John Parsons: "Norwegians in New Zealand. A Register of Norwegians Naturalised in New Zealand 1858-1948":
Christensen, Anton, 22, Magisaas, Labourer, Palmerston North, 07/03/05
(The date of registration is the date that the person was registered as an "alien" or became a New Zealand citizen - day/month/year)
Magisaas - or Magisås which will be the modern spelling - is a farm in Salangen, Troms county. This is in the far north of Norway.
I checked the parish records for Ibestad / Salangen (Salangen belonged to Ibestad parish at that time) and could find the following information:
Anton Sigvart Berg was born on the 19th January 1883 and baptized on the 27th May 1883.
His parents were Benedikt Olai Kristensen, born 1858 and Rebekka Maria Andersdatter, born 1852. Their residence was Magisaas. The occupation of Benedikt Olai Kristensen was "husmann og fisker" (cotter and fisherman)
Tove D. Johansen, Oslo, Norway

Re: Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
A little more:
Benedikt Olai was born on the 3rd October 1858 and baptized on the 13th February 1859 in Ibestad.
His parents were Christen (Kristen) Borlund (?) Pedersen and Gjertrud Caspersdatter, living on the Løbstad farm. They were not married at that time, but married later.
The family can be found on the 1865 census for Ibestad (on the Løbstad farm). Two more children have been born by then: Kornelia Kristensdatter and Marie K. Kristensdatter.

Re: Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
Tove, you are a superstar!
No doubt you found the correct link back to Norway.
Anton Sigvart Berg's confirmation is recorded in the Ibestad/Salangen parish record, 31.07.1898, no. 49:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-103
Born 19.01.1883 and baptised 27.05.1883.
Parents: Fisherman Bendix Kristensen and Rebekka Marie Andersdatter.
His brother Konrad Meyer Bendixen was confirmed at the same time (no. 50)
On 2(?).11.1899 Anton and family left Salangen bond for Queensland in Australia (no. 115-120):
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-148
Anton cannot have stayed in Australia for long since he naturalised in New Zealand already in 1905.
As Tove already has mentioned they left via Trondheim on 29.11.1899:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... 89592#ovre
Independent of Tove finding a connection to Magisås in Salangen for Anton, my search for Jørgine did also bring me to Magisås! The only data in the DISTREFF data base that fits reasonably well with the information from the New Zealand burial locator is Jørgine Marie Johansdatter, born 1889 in Salangen. I have been in contact with the person who has submitted the DISTREFF data and he is willing to share information about Jørgine's ancestors. However, he did not know the history of Jørgine.
According to Salangen parich records, she was born 19.02.1889 and baptised 23.06.1889:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... x_side=-11
Parents living at Magisaas, Johan Samuelsen, cotter and fisherman, born 1859 and wife Anna Sofie Hansdatter, born 1861.
In 1900 Jørgine and family was living at Magisaas:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... k=340#ovre
Her confirmation is recorded in the Salangen parish record, 19.06.1904, no.4:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-103
She was still living at Magisås. Parents: farmer Johan Samuelsen Magisås (dead?) and wife Anna Sofie Hansdatter
I have not been able to find any information confirming that she emigrated to New Zealand, but she is a very good candidate. It is likely that they married in New Zealand, but I have not been able to find them in the New Zealand Society of Genealogists’ record of New Zealand Marriages 1836 -1956.

Hi again,
The 1917 Alien Record for New Zealand has a record of
Name Jorgine Christensen
Date 1917
Age 37
Birth Country Norway
Years in NZ 10
Place Palmerston North
This indicates that Jørgine emigrated around 1906/1907.

Re: Anton Sigvard Berg Christensen, Jorgine Johansen til NZ
Found this information in the Salangen bygdebok page 285 (chapter on Magisås farm):
Johan Samuelsen (1859 - 1911) was married in 1884 to Anna Sofie Hansdatter Laberg (1861- )
Among their children is listed: Jørgine Johansen married to Anton Kristensen, Magisås. Emigrated to New Zealand.
So yes Vidar, you found the right Jørgine Johansen.
There is even a picture of Johan Samuelsen Magisås born 11th July 1859 in the book -

Hei!
