database clean up

Hello, I've looked at past posts, and think this is an appropriate
question for the group.... I want to get back into working on
genealogy. When I started, I imported someone else's research into
mine - close to 5,000 names of people related to my great grandmother.
As a newbie, it was very exciting. After working on the tree a few
years and learning more about genealogy, I'm still glad to have access
to the other person's research, but I really wish I hadn't merged it in
with mine. Short of reentering all of "my" information, does anyone
have advice on how to approach this problem?

My current software is "The Master Genealogist v6." I'm new to it,
having bought it about 2 years ago, but not using it much since I
realized what I really should do before adding more information is
clean up what I have.

if I do a merge Family Tree Maker tells me to back up my data first

so I keep the back ups separately so that they don't get overwritten

in November I had a glitch and corrupted a field so I went back to the
August version

In FTM I can display a tree and export only that to a new file

rule 1)
freeze your master file you have today
back it up off site

rule 2)
work on a copy to make a new master file for future use

I make new files for different purposes

eg
I exported my mother and all her LAPHAM ancestors to start the
one-name study of LAPHAM
or
my granny became the Raglan Jones

really would be simplest to export what you want
if necessary in chunks of an editable size
and merge them into a new master file

You can hack the guts of a GEDCOM file with your favourite text editor.

*** Make a backup copy of your file first ***

Each individual starts with a level 0 "INDI" line, like
0 @I1101@ INDI

Which will be followed fairly closely with a level 1 "NAME" line
1 NAME Margaret Threlfall /MYERSCOUGH/


Delete all the lines until you come to the next level 0 line.

I don't have TMG, but many genealogy programs are capable of loading
GEDCOM files that contain inconsistencies. Try doing a few simple
deletions first. You may find that you get an error report when you load
the edited file saying something to the effect that "Individual I1101
could not be found" and anyone who had that person as their wife, mother
or daughter now has an "<Unknown>".

If they are all related to a single individual, it should be possible to

call up a tree using that individual as the starting point, and delete
everyone on it. You'd have to re-enter your ggm's data, but that's simpler
than doing everyone's.
Something along the lines of "show all ancestors of X including siblings,
etc", "delete everyone in tree."
Mind you, I've never used TMG, but this has been possible with FTM for a
long time, and is so basic that I can't believe TMG can't do it.
FIRST, though, make a backup copy or two...

Katie,

TMG will let you run a list of People report for the last date edited.
If you run that for the date you imported that gedcom you can use a
flag to mark people edited on that date and then create a new dataset
with everyone except people having that flag.

You might consider joining the TMG mailing list- great group of people
that will explain more if needed.
