Old version of FTM

Legg inn av Paul Blair » 21. januar 2006 kl. 0.46

A friend has an old computer (Win95, FTM 3.02) and is about to upgrade
the hardware to a laptop with WinXP.

Will the old version of FTM run on the new device? I guess if the answer
is yes, then it will read the GEDCOM.

If not, I will give her an unused v8.

TIA

It's $66 in Australia. Her present software is adequate for what she

You say "old" version without mentioning
the actual version number which might
be needed to be known to actually
attempt to answer your question.

dUH, OF COURSE it hit me in the eye
as I was scrolling down the above.

Only way to know for sure if 3.02 is to
see if it can be installed and used, if it
doesn't then maybe the XP "compatability"
option might work in this case.

Paul you should be more worried about whether the xp will run on the old
machine, the makeup of the programme is totally different from win95,
although xp is based on win95.

Paul,

If she can get the v8 loaded, it will import her old data. But I
"think" her old version will also run on the XP computer. As best I
can recall, it was Win98 compatible.... And I was able to run later
versions, (also Win98 compatible) on an XP machine with no problems.

For what the average person uses it for they do not need the latest and greatest version
of all the software out there. I use FTM version 11 and could not begin to tell you what
all is encluded in the program as is the case with most of the people I know that use it.
Kind of like MS Office. Most people use it for writing letters and such and do not need
to keep upgrading to get all the useless stuff they keep adding to the program just so
they can charge more!!

OK folks, thanks for the points of view. I know v8 will run on her new
XP, it's only a question of whether (or not) v8 will read the old data.
We'll give it a try.

XP is/was only a pretty version of Win 2K...just to take up the
challenge! :-) And no, we don't all need the latest and greatest
software, especially as the genie companies now try to sell you 2 or 3
partial programs, instead of one competent package. <vbg>

I had no trouble going from a ver 4 file to ver 10..... For safety, get her
to make a grdcom from ver 3 before you upgrade. While I agree that few
people need every single improvement in the programme, there are significant
improvements between vers 3 and 8 that I think she'll like.

Golly, Lesley, I would *hope* that 5 releases would produce something!!!

I've not found some of the later changes particularly useful (except the

all-in-one tree and the entire database tree), but some time around ver 5
(ish) they introduced the improved methods of sourcing, merging of
indivivuals and better trees.

What's the diff between all-in-one and entire database?

The fun thing is to work your way through a GEDCOM import, which has
gotten worse with each successive model...FTW reads the GEDCOM twice,
tells you the import is Done!, then asks which individuals to include. What?

Now it reads the GEDCOM for the third time, tells you no-one matches (of
course), repeats the message, and then, at last, you're done. Not an
intuitive method!

You can tell it to show all relatives of a single individual, or you can
tell it to show trees for everyone in the database. The latter is very
useful for someone like me. I'm doing a 1-place study rather than a 1-family
study and my FTM file is full of unrelated families. Last time I ran an
all-database tree, I found several very small families I'd forgotten about!

I agree on the difference between vers 3 and 8. When I said everyone did not need the
latest and greatest I was thinking more along the 2006 bersion I think it is called.
