Software advice
Three different branches of the family are trying to work on a family
tree together and share research and information. Two of the group have
mac's and one has a PC. Is there any well rated software that all three
can use?
IF not what software would you recomend for the two different systems
and is there a way to share data if the software is different?

Best software is Reunion for the Macs. There is an older version for the
PC that is called something like Generations.

Far's I know, there's no platform-independent program for genealogy.
(GEDCOM isn't a program, it's a data format).
Frankly, under the circs, why not just use plain-text e-mails to one
another. "Hi, guys, I found Char1otte Ha11's birthdate -- 12 Never 2525
in Podunk, Kenya" MUCH easier than each of you sorting through a large
family tree to see what's new.
If the PCer is willing to buy a used MAC, the three of you can use
Reunion; if the Macies are willing to buy PCs, you can use Legacy which
allows exactly what you're wanting to do. But, cross-platform -- nada.

Or, since the Mac is able to run PC programs, all three can use a PC
program, like Legacy which Cheryl advised, or RootsMagic, or The
Master Genealogist.... but while Reunion is a great program (Mac only
now) Generations is NOT one that many people would recommend for a PC.

suggest you look into a hosted phpGedView or The Next Generation (TNG). Both
programs allow, even encourage, collaborative genealogy and, while I prefer to
run my own webserver and phpGedView installation, do not require that you do so
on your own machine. Check out http.//www.phpgedview.net for details on the
app and look at the ads on the righthand side of the page for hosting sites.

You've gotten a number of suggestions for stand-alone applications. Might I
suggest you look into a hosted phpGedView or The Next Generation (TNG). Both

Re: Software advice
Not sure if this will help - but PHPGEDVIEW is designed to overcome
this problem.
This is a FREE open source program get more info at
http://www.phpgedview.net/
I use it on my website http://www.redpencil.com.au/genealogy
to share my information with others.
It uses your Gedcom file as a basis and allows to add and download
gedcom information. (password protected for upload)
Only catch is you need a website - there are providers that give you
access for free.
I had very little trouble getting it working but did take a little bit
of time.
Hope this is some help.
