Hello all. This is my first attempt at Norwegian genealogy, and I know I'll
make mistakes. Please accept my apologies in advance.
My wifes' g-grandfather was born in Norway, and came to Australia circa
1886. The following information comes from his death certificate:
His name was Karl Wilhelm Severin Petersen. He was born circa 1864, in
Fredrikstad, Ostfold. His mother was Andea Olsdatter, and his father was
John Petersen. From my extremely limited knowledge of Norway, I found this
last piece of information odd. I thought his father would have the first
name Peter. Am I correct? Also, is anyone able to help me to try to find
information on Karls' birth, and of his parents' marriage? BTW, I have tried
looking up the LDS, and also my states' Public Record Office to try to get
emigration information, to no avail. Thank you in advance,
Johnno.

In Denmark the naming convention laid down in 1828, where children
would get either -son og -daughter (-datter) appended to their fathers
given name, was changed in 1856. After this change real family names
were enforced by law. I believe something similar happened in Norway.
