Help with old software

Legg inn av Gjest » 16. november 2006 kl. 2.26

I've got a backup disk with info on my family that my mother (since
past) used. She lived in southern Utah and even taught others how to
use it. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the program.
The backup disk has six .bak files. They are named:
INDIV2.BAK
MARR2.BAK
NAMADD2.BAK
NAME2.BAK
NOTES2.BAK
REPTITL2.BAK
Does anyone recognize these backup files and know the program and where
I can find it?
Thanks in advance.

Okay, on further search, I found its a backup to PAF 2.31
sorry to intrude.

Frank, if you have a Mac, Linux, or unix system, you should be able to
use "strings" to see what's in them. If you don't, I would be happy to
try it for you. Email me them and I'll give it a shot. Of course I
will treat your data with privacy and respect and nobody but me will see
it, and I'll delete my copies after sending you what I can. I won't
promise I can get anything from it, but we may be able to at least learn
what application created them.

What can you tell us about the system she was using, or what software
she might have had? People here have an amazing array of different
programs and systems, the more info we have to work from the more likely
you'll get information from those files. Do you have her computer?

That could be very good news indeed. See previous re: emailing me the
files, this might be easy.

- Apparently PAF 4 will read PAF 2 files. Or maybe your local FHC
still has an older version installed?

- Ancestral Quest will do a 'Direct import of PAF 2.1 – 2.31
databases' - http://www.ancquest.com/FeatList.htm

- The Master Genealogist will directly import a whole range of formats.
They used to have a comprehensive list on their website
(http://whollygenes.com/), though I can't find it quickly. I know it
will import PAF, just not if it will go back that far.

The PAF 5.2 CD has versions 2, 3, and 4 on it in other
subdirectories. (I don't know for certain whether 2, 3, or
4 run under Wine, but 5.2 does.) If you need, I could pick
up a CD and toss it in the mail to you, but it will probably
be a couple of weeks before I'd be able to get my hands on a
CD.

Is it necessary to install the old version? Most programmes have backward

compatibility. Can't he just download the current version from the LDS site
and use that?

Hi Lesley,

According to the LDS website..."This PAF 5.2 version will convert PAF
3.0 and 4.0 data files to its improved file format."

So PAF 2.3 is too far back to import directly. However, a person could
use PAF 3 and import 2.3 data into it. Make a backup copy of the data,
then import it with PAF 5.2 kinda like hopscotch. *smile*

PAF4 indicates it can import indiv2.dat files from PAF2. I don't konw
enough to know if it would then pull in the links in the other files.

PAF4 is still on the list of downloadable free software at
http://www.familysearch.org/.

PAF 5.2 has a function for exporting data in "PAF 2.3" format, but when
you do so it creates a .ged file and a .lst file.

The internal documentation doesn't say what files it will import, but it
will import the .ged file that it exported in "PAF 2.3" format.
