Albert HALVERSON born BERGEN 1858/59, emigrated to NZ
Hello everyone.
For about 6 or 7 years now I have been trying to find details of where exactly in Norway my great great grandfather came from in Norway. I have started trying to find him again and have just spent another 2 days solid ploughing through the online 1865 census looking for him or his parents again with no luck. I have also tried looking in the lists of emigrants available at the Digital Archives again with no luck
What I know is as follows :-
Albert HALVERSON was born about 1858/59 in Bergen, Norway according to his Naturalisation papers and also his marriage certificate. (There was a rumour in the family the he had changed his name to make it more english so I assume it was originally HALVORSEN and he changed the spelling to HALVERSON)
He married on 28 July 1882 in Auckland, New Zealand aged 25 years. His occupation was Mariner/Sailmaker - so he could have possibly sailed to NZ as part of a ships crew at any time from about 1870 to prior to his 1882 marriage?
I have a copy of his 28 July 1882 marriage register entry that quotes his age as 25 years and birthplace as Bergen, Norway and shows his parents as Albert HALVERSON, a carpenter. and Olena KNUTSON.
His 1st child, born 1883 in Auckland New Zealand, was named Albert Benjamin.
The birth certificate of his 2nd child (my great grandfather) Louis Benjamin HALVERSON, born 30 August 1889 in Auckland, NZ states his age as 31 years, birthplace Norway and occupation Mariner.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Anne-Lise,
Thank you so much for looking, I really appreciate any help I can get on this one, as I said I've been looking for this guy for years now
I have a photocopy of his marriage register entry and his marriage details definitely state that his mother's name was Olena Knutson and his father's occupation was a carpenter and I think that he would have got these details correct? So I'm doubtful that this is him because of this.
Regards Dave.

Hi,
It also appears that Albert referred to by Anne-Lise lived in Bergen in 1900

Dave,
A search on Halverson in the Auckland Area Passenger Arrivals 1838-1886 data base resulted in one Halverson record apparently arriving Auckland in 1879. Halverson is such an unusual name that it seems rather likely to be your man.

Hi Vidar,
Yes I have seen this and it seems to confirm the 1879 arrival - I was a bit confused though as the "Junior" would indicate to me someone that's quite young - say 16 years or younger and the Albert I'm searching for would have been about 23 in 1879.
Regards Dave.

Thanks Vidar,
You are thorough - yes they are all family members that I'm following up on. I've just contacted a cousin in NZ - the one that posted the TOPSE/TORPSE message - she's sending over a package of genealogical details re the family so I'm holding off doing any more until it arrives in the next week or so.
Once again thanks for you help, it's really appreciated.
Regards Dave.

Well I've just received some family stuff from a cousin which includes a copy of a letter from another relative which states that Albert HALVERSON was previously known as Halvor Halverson Torpse.
Also says "he stated on his naturalisation papers he was born in Bergen and not Valders" - I assume this should be Valdres but there seem to be a few of these in various places in Norway

Re: Albert HALVERSON born BERGEN 1858/59, emigrated to NZ
Dave,
I am not able to find any Olena Knutson with a son Albert in the 1865 census.
However, I may have found a candidate for your Albert Halverson. A search in FamilySearch on Albert Halverson gave the following result. He was the son of Halvor Olsen and Guri Halvorsdatter. The original church book record of his christening, no. 65, is also available. In the 1865 census Albert and his parents lived at Berg railway station in Løten, Hedmark county. Could this Berg have become Bergen in New Zealand? Not all information fits with your data but at least we should try to figure out what this Albert Oscar Halvorson did later in life. I was not able to find him in the 1900 census. The name Torp is also known several places in the Løten area.

Re: Albert HALVERSON born BERGEN 1858/59, emigrated to NZ
Hi,
Recently, this subject has also been addressed in the Norway Heritage forum Kiwi Vikings & Aussies by a person living in New Zealand:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/top ... hichpage=1
There it has been concluded that Albert used the name Halvor Halvorson when he lived in Norway. A summary of the findings is given below:
Halvor was confirmated Oct 6, 1872 in Kvam not so far from Bergen. He was 15 1/4 years old = born about 1857 on Böeiet in Nordre Aurdal, Oppland. Bøeiet could be a subfarm under farm #43 Bø in Ulnes in Nordre Aurdal. His father was Halvor Olssen Skage in Gol, Hallingdal and mother Oline Knudsdatter. They lived on the farm Torpe.
No 9: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 660594.jpg
Halvor´s mother Oline Knudsdatter Bø died June 30, 1877. Residence Raaen. She was unmarried and 50 years old. Her "surname" Bø fits with Halvor's birthplace Bøeiet. It is very likely that this is Halvor/Alberts mother.
No 44: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 660556.jpg
When Oline Knudsdatter died she was "inderstpige" = unmarried woman living and working on someone else's farm. She left behind ”1 Søn i udenrigs Fart som Matros” = 1 son sailing as a sailor on international seas. The local Magistrate tried several times in 1877 and 1878 to get in touch with her son to settle the estate. He got a letter from Olines son with adress: Boardinghouse, London.
Regards
Vidar
