with legacy as primary . How do i transfer? Old

I've done transfers like that quite a few times including very recently.
The usb transfer works justs fine as does a transfer over your network
if you had a local area network connecting your 2 computers. What also
works very well is to remove the HD and install it into the other system
for long enough to transfer the files (or permanently?). That's perhaps
the best way when you have 30-40 gigabytes of data to transfer at a
time.

I regularly and successfully transfer files with Direct Cable Connection
(Parallel cable) between Win95 and Win98 with no problems - apart from
the time involved.

The local network is possibly better as the new PC might not recognise
the old disk (or possibly have connectors for it).

Win XP comes with software on the CD to help you transfer both settings
and files from older versions of Windows - you can use either the
Windows XP CD to install the software on the legacy PC (or it will
create a software install floppy - if you have a floppy disk drive). The
only problem is it needs a reasonable amount of spare disk space on the
old Windows PC to build the compressed files before the transfer - I've
found this to be a problem in the past, although it is possible to do
the transfer selectively. You can even use a serial cable connection,
but that is very slow.

No software to install, no cable to buy...

That works pretty good for data, Denis, not so good for entire programs
given today's programs ridiculous sizes.

If you're just looking to move data, and your old PC has a USB port, hook up
one of those portable drive keys that come in in sizes of 245MB or more,
copy the files to it, and then plug it into the new PC and copy your data.
This is quick and painless.

A google search of "data transfer" +USB returned 661,000 hits. The

first one is
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... pNo=166854
This cable, which includes data transfer software, is listed at $19.99
plus shipping. I'm sure that given this information you will be able to
locate an equivalent local to you.
Good luck and remember,

How about with a Memory Stick? I do exactly the same thing with the same
systems you mention. I bought a 512MB at Costco for $45 and it works great for
that purpose with only USB 1.1. In fact it's become my major source of backup
for PAF backups with 24,000 names and 5 Megs of notes, and there's plenty of
room for other files.

Depending on the size and number of files you want to transfer a USB
connected digital camera can be used as a temporary file transfer drive
write, read and eventually delete using the computer. Don't try and view
non image files on the camera itself!

You can buy a USB floppy drive for about 20 bucks...it's worth
having around for sneakernet projects like this. Less work
than setting up a home network just to migrate from an old
machine.

My wife just bought a new machine, but her old machine has Windows 95 and no
USB sockets. It does have Laplink installed, but when she tries to instal it
on the new machine, XP says that some files are missing.
