Cottager Contracts

Legg inn av gj26167 » 17. april 2017 kl. 5.59

Hi,

I've identified a gggg grandfather (how would you say that in Norwegian, oldeoldeoldeoldroldefaren?) who lived on the Øie farm in Melhus Prestegjeld. The 1801 census describes him as huusmand med jord, which I think means that he leased a cottage from the owner of the farm. The census also describes his son's occupation as inderste og drejer, which I think means, servant and lathe operator, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know if Cottager Contracts exist for this area? and do they have any genealogical value?

My gggg grandfather's name is Ole Olsen f. 1736 and his son's name is Sivert, f. 1772.

The link to the 1801 Census page is:

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Regards.

First some expressions.
English -> Norwegian
Grandfather -> Bestefar
Great (G) Grandfather -> Oldefar
GG Grandfather -> Tippoldefar
GGG Grandfather -> Tipptippoldefar or 2 x Tippoldefar
GGGG Grandfather -> 3 x Tippoldefar
and so on.

An "Inderste" rented a room on tthe farm.
Yes, a "drejer" also written "dreier" is a lathe operator
An "Huusmand" leased a cottage on the farm. He payed for it by working on the farm.
An "Huusmand med jord" indicates that he also is leasing an area to cultivate.

This is just a very short description, an I suppose there are many here that could describe it much better.

With regards

Paul
