Charl Knudsen
Looking for a Charl Knudsen emigrated to USA at the age of 24 in 1865. Family story was that he was from Oslo. We found a Charl Knudsen born Nov. 4, 1840 in Risør, VA - parents Johannes Knudsen and Maren Andrea Knudsen. We have not been able to find emigration records for this Charl Knudsen.
In the USA he was a ship carpenter in Chicago and sometimewent by the name of Charly.
Thank you again for any help you can provide.

This is the person you have found then I understand (no 50)

Is it not possible to find some more exact birth date? Or a little more information about him?
There are many Carl Knudsens.
Is it this ship carpenter Charles Knudsen on the 1880 census in Chicago?
If he was married in the US (Chicago?) it is perhaps possible to find a record of the marrriage?

I cannot find those persons on the 1900 census?

Re: Charl Knudsen

Re: Charl Knudsen
You're probably right there, Wenche. I find a Charles Johnson living as a border in Chicago ward 4 in the 1870 census. Born in Norway in 1840, working as a shoemaker in 1870, which would be reasonable since his father was a master shoemaker. Should be possible to follow.
The confusion is that he is written as Carl Knudsen in the church book when baptized.
Still in Chicago as shoemaker in 1880, married to Laura born ca. 1849 in Norway, children Josephina, Mary and Julius, born in Illinois.
In 1900 we find Laura living with Josephina and Julius in Chicago, in addition to the children Catherine, Celia and Casper. No Charles at home, Laura arrived the US from Norway in 1864, she is head of family, but still listed as married. The 3 oldest children all working within retail sales. Julius was in Anchorage during WW1.
In 1920 Laura was a widow, living with her daughter Mary and husband Louis Franz with family in Chicago.
Is this familiar ?

The child Tove has found, is not baptized with the name Carl Knudsen, as far as I can see. Only Charl. Parents: Skoemagermester Johannes Knudsen/Maren Andrea Knudsdr.

Re: Charl Knudsen
Hei

A 3 (1838-1864), Fødte og døpte 1846, side 38.

Would be nice if the person who started this inquiry could give a comment ?
