Get Ready for Family Tree Maker 2005
You can publish your family tree on the Internet: Share your findings
with others. A home page wizard makes the process easy - just choose
which individuals you want to include and the page will be created in
minutes.
You can't go wrong with the Family Tree Maker genealogy software. If
you already have an older version of FTM, you will want to upgrade to
Family Tree Maker 2005 and take advantage of the recent upgrades.
See: Family Tree Maker 2005--
http://amberskyline.com/treasuremaps/fa ... maker.html
Here are some of the features and benefits of Family Tree Maker 2005
(FTM 2005):
There are several different ways to look at your genealogy data with
the Family Tree Maker program.
Including:
-Pedigree View: Which allows you to quickly and easily navigate your
family tree. You can view up to seven generations. When you navigate
to other generations in your family tree, there is animation that
helps you see how the tree is changing so you won't get lost.
-Family View: This makes it easy to enter and view information about a
single family unit. You can easily add more details and notes about an
individual or a marriage, photographs or other images, additional
spouses or other family members, and sources of your information.
-Storage of Countless Facts: You can store an unlimited number of
facts for every individual in your Family File. There are fact
categories (like births, deaths, marriages, emigration, etc.) so it's
simple to use.
-Multimedia Scrapbook: Every person in your Family File can have his
or her own digital Scrapbook. You can also store and display almost
any type of information - including sound, video, and text files -
along with a wide variety of graphic formats.
-View Two Family Files Simultaneously: You can view, compare, and edit
Family Files side-by-side. You can check for similarities and
differences between your files and ones you receive from family
members or other genealogy researchers.
Easy to use search features - Including:
-One-Click Searching: To find leads on your ancestors. Family Tree
Maker's Web search feature will automatically search their
genealogical databases for more information on the people in your
tree, and will rank the results to easily identify the ones that are
most likely to be your ancestors. The FTM Web Search Report makes it
easy to compare the information found online with the people in your
tree, so you can quickly determine which information is relevant to
you.
-Web Merge Process: Merging and appending data from the Web has never
been easier. Now Family Tree Maker takes the guesswork out of merging.
An easy to use wizard guides you through the incorporation of each new
record you find. You can either accept Family Tree Maker's
recommendations and add the new data in one step, or you can use the
wizard to help you. None of your existing information will be
overwritten.
This will SAVE TIME! One of the most difficult tasks of family
historians is finding the time to research and learn more about their
family trees. Family Tree Maker 2005 can save you valuable time and
makes searching for and finding ancestors easier than ever. Once you
begin entering family names and building your tree, and as long as
you're connected to the Internet, Family Tree Maker is working for
you.
Family Tree Maker 2005 has:
-Customized Charts and Reports: Will let you showcase your family
history with your own personal touches. You can choose from a variety
of professionally designed templates, add memorable photos, fonts, and
box and border styles. You can even create multimedia trees complete
with audio and video clips.
-Countless Heirloom-Quality Printouts: Allow you to display your
family history with Family Tree Maker's wide selection of attractive
trees, reports, maps, and more - from personal keepsakes to beautiful
heirloom-quality printouts.
-All-in-One Tree: The All-in-One tree allows you to display every
member of your Family File in one continuous tree. You can create one
for your next family reunion - your family and friends will be
delighted.
-Maps and Timelines: You can trace your family's journey through time
and across continents. Maps display the various location in which your
ancestors lived, while Timelines display your ancestors against the
historic milestones that helped shape their lives - and yours.
-Family Books: Family Tree Maker lets you combine your favorite
printouts into a book, then automatically generates a Table of
Contents, Index, and more. Print a keepsake copy for a loved one or
publish it on your own personal Home Page to share with everyone.
-Professionally Designed Templates: Take advantage of professional
artwork to help you create beautiful family trees for gifts or
display.
FTM 2005 makes it easy to share your genealogy information with
others.

Dave,
By your "spamcop" address I see that you have self-appointed
spam-police issues, or whatever. Build a bridge and get over it.
I publish a genealogy newsletter and have people asking about
genealogy software all day long. I decided to post it when I saw a
previous post about the common question, "Which is the best genealogy
software."
We're almost into 2005 and here an informative article about FTM 2005
with features and benefits--features that should be used responsibly.
I don't see a problem with it. Note: I'm not saying Family Tree Maker
2005 is the best, but it should be considered.

not in the discussion groups. Saying "Hey, this program does this, that,

is not.
Usenet discussion groups are not here as free marketing recepticles

Hmmm..
I'm very aware of what the SpamCop service is. I was referring to
people who think it is their job to be the "Internet police" and go
around obsessing about it. The fact that you have a spamcop e-mail
address (with all the other choices out there) makes me think that you
have spam issues.
Then I make a post and you snipe right in--"This guy is a spammer."
Pleased to meet you, too, Dave. My named is Robert."
It was easier to post an article that I already had created than to
start fresh and say, "FTM does this and that." Please note that had
YOU done some research (my links were in my post) you would know that
I was not some guy hiding in the shadows posting willy-nilly on all
the forums. I've been publishing my genealogy newsletter since 1995
and have helped thousands (millions if you count the DearMYRTLE
Internet genealogy radio shows).
However Dave, as I was reading through posts--with the urge to wring
your smart-aleck neck--I saw that you post a lot...and that you help
people a lot. So I've got to give props to you. Just lighten up.
For the group: Since the features and benefits of FTM 2005 were
listed, it would be nice to hear feedback about that and your personal
experiences with the software. Because that is the topic this thread
is supposed to be about.

You earlier pleaded that: "I decided to post it when I saw a previous post

*that* thread if you had something to say. However, that would not have
given you the chance to create this new advertising subject header. What a
lame excuse!
Now for those out there who wonder what motivates a spammer like this one
and others, read: http://www.genealogy.com/aff-info.html
Then take a look at his website and the ordering link for FTM 2005. If you
let your mouse-cursor hover over the link, you will see:
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click etc. Does that sound strange for a
link that will take you to FTM? like mine here does:
http://familytreemaker.com/default.aspx. The reason for that is that Bfast
http://www.cj.com/solutions/adv_bfast.jsp handles all of the work for FTM
in notifying them who should get a commission if a sale is completed. Your
browser will pass all of the information needed to that website by using
cookies and he would get a commission 2 days or a week later if the
cookies were still there. That's why he wants you to go to his website and
use his link instead of another - to get a cookie for him onto your
computer!
That's why it's always a good idea to order anything directly from a
vendor's website and to delete all cookies in your browser beforehand!
Let's remove the spammers' incentive to spam!

P.S. Here's what others are saying about this "lazy spammer":
"I feel I can discern between when a person is trying to teach someone
something and when someone is trying to impress another with how much
they know. You are a teacher. Thank you." (Alan Coppock)
"I am so thrilled at all of the "Treasure Maps". I will have lots to
read and get into my mind the direction I need to go. The ones I have
read I say to myself I should have done that or I wondered how to do
that and now with Treasure Maps I feel a sense of direction. I have
read many tips on genealogy but I'm impressed with the way you explain
the ins and outs. I haven't had that feeling of feeling lost before I
start. Thank you for the clarity of your messages and keep up the good
work! Will look forward to future issues." (Joyce Medina)
"Thanks so very much for all the work you do in your e-mail monthly
newsletter. I've been doing family history research for several years,
but have learned more in the last year from you than in the last 10
years on my own. I've got a notebook where I keep all my 'helps'. The
info from you is right up front. Keep up the good work." (Gayle
Navarre)
"Just a quick note to let you know how much I look forward to receiving
my monthly Treasure Map - and it is a treasure. You do an excellent job
of both educating and encouraging us. Your tips are suited for both the
novice and the experienced computer user as well as a genealogist. Your
attention to detail, and the organized format make the information
definitely user-friendly." (Vicki Vigil)
"Your materials are just invaluable. I don't want to miss out on
anything you have written. You are a great facilitator. You enable us
to reach our goals. That, to me, is what every really good teacher
does, enables one to solve a problem in order to reach an eventual
goal. I wonder if you have heard how many times I have said, "Thank
you, Mr. Ragan!" (Jan MacMillan)
"Robert, I signed on to receive Treasure Maps in February of this year.
I have read them all several times and recently printed them out to put
into a notebook so I can refer to them while on the web. I want to
thank you for such easy to understand instructions and ideas.
"And I would also like to thank you for the time and effort you put
into those instructions. I can't tell you how much help it has been and
I can't possibly thank you enough." (Deborah Clark)
"I'm extremely impressed with the consistency and clarity of your
articles! Thanks Again for being such a reliable source for those
blessed or lacking in the Internet navigational skills." (Frances
Jones)
"I don't know where my search would be, if not for your newsletter. For
those of us starting our search late in our lives, after our parents
are gone, you've provided information that would otherwise take me
years to learn about. May God bless you, son!" (Nancy Bozeman Byrd)
"Thank you! I just joined your List and must compliment you already. I
have joined several Lists now & you are the first to actually "give" me
something immediately! How exciting. I've even PAID for one membership
(we won't mention names) and have never been treated so that I felt
like an individual person. You did it with your writing style and my
first tutorial. Thank you so much." (Sonja Sanders)
"Having just read my fourth issue of your newsletter, I thought I
should write a short note to say, "thank you" for a very interesting
newsletter. I've subscribed (and unsubscribed) to several on-line
newsletters and mailing lists. "Treasure Maps" is truly unique and the
most looked forward to of the group. (Linda L. VanOrden)
"Really enjoy your "Treasure Maps." You have done a terrific job of
gathering material. I'm on (*name removed) newsgroup and some are too
chatty - yours has info." (Shirley A. Jones)
"I've been doing genealogy work on my family for some seventeen years
now and sure wish I would have had a source of info to help me get
started. Although many people were willing to give advice - nothing
like the "Treasure Maps" was available. It gives points on actually
doing research that I've not found anywhere else." (Richard Pingry)
"I just finished reading, printing out and filing in a 3-ring binder
all back-issues of your delightful and informative Treasure Maps
newsletter. WOW! is all I can say - Each issue is chock-full of great
info and reference items - helpful hints, great articles and something
to go back to when you need a helping hand. You are one of the best
kept secrets on the net. I'm going to tell all of my genealogy friends
about Treasure Maps. Thanks again." (Carllene Marek)
"I just received my first issue of the Treasure Maps Genealogy
Newsletter. I want to say that it is one of the best and most
informative newsletters I've seen from anyone!! Thank you" (Norman M.
Vance)
"You have no idea how much I use this information. DON'T STOP!!! We
help a large number of people with their genealogy, and sometimes
contribute an item to our Church newsletter. We are in a senior citizen
area in Arizona and there are many who do genealogy. (I'm 74+) Thanks
again" (Catherine Gagnon)
"Having read all the useless postings in my box this morning I came
across yours. It was a pleasure to read such a fine piece of work you
are to be commended for your fine work. I enjoyed each section of it
and will be sending you a donation in tomorrows mail. Keep up the great
work, it is a breath of fresh air in a rather stale atmosphere. Work
like this is what computer genealogy should be about." (Wayne Higley
Jr.)
"THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! What a help your newsletter has
been. It is exactly what I have been looking for and need so badly!!!!
God bless you!!! I really did get a lot of helpful info from
it.....just knowing there is a "home base" so to speak where info on
genealogy research is centralized through your newsletter is long
overdue and so much appreciated! Your newsletter was like prescription
glasses... helping me to focus better on what it is I want to see!"
(Laura DeLuca)
"Since I began getting your e-mail last month, my children are starving
(I don't have time to cook). My house, well you can't walk through it -
my son wants to "cut" my computer privileges... Seriously, after all
the money I spent on [name omitted] programs - and then there are all
the CD's to buy to 'find out' if your ancestors are on (and they're
not), I have gotten more information from your help." (Jean Brannen)
"I have been an avid reader (and user) of your Treasure Maps as well as
your instructive books (especially the PAJAMA method). Keep up the good
work - you are the only one who seems to have the unprofessional
genealogist's needs in mind when providing helpful hints, etc.
Sincerely," (Charles Putt)

Funny, it looked like you were making an assumption based on wrong
guesses. And now it looks like a backpedal.
I was referring to
people who think it is their job to be the "Internet police" and go
around obsessing about it. The fact that you have a spamcop e-mail
address (with all the other choices out there) makes me think that
you
have spam issues.
All the other choices? I maintain servers for a living, I have and
can
do the procmail/spamassassin thing, but why bother when I can offload
that
effort to someone else? And why specifically should you give a damn
what
my technology decision making process looks like, anyway? You're not
qualified to second-guess me.
Then I make a post and you snipe right in--"This guy is a spammer."
That would be because you put a commercial message in a discussion
group,
rather in the soc.genealogy.marketplace group where it belongs. Most
people who make that mistake learn from it, and correct their
behavior.
Some even apologize for being ignorant.
So you posted your commercial, yes, we know.
It was easier to post an article that I already had created than to
start fresh and say, "FTM does this and that."
So, you're a _lazy_ spammer. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

Dave,
You view me as a
-spammer
-creature
-"unrepentant spammer"
-personal not capable of being educated
I see you as a self-appointed Internet policeman who cries spam at the
drop of a hat.
I made a post that was too commercial for this group's taste, which I
see now that the witch hunt is on, but not off topic, not about
improving your love life or some other thing. And heaven forbid anyone
use an associate link. Let's not mention that most of the decent
genealogy sites do--and gasp, Rootsweb does. Clear out those cookies,
gang.
I've tried to make contribution to the genealogy world and I hate spam.
My newsletter is opt-in. And one post to a group that the group does
not like--that INCLUDES my name and links, etc. does not spam make, my
friend. I'm not hiding in the shadows blasting stuff out everywhere. I
think you need to be educated...on manners--which of course, you'll
find amusing.
I'll not grovel at your feet begging for forgivness for making a post
you didn't like--but it would be wonderful if we could play nice.

Here's a better one and one for Ancestry.com also:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/
http://landing.ancestry.com/multisubs/subscribe.aspx
Neither of those URL links there are polluted such that one of these
greedy $pammer$ will get an unearned payoff. Save this post and/or
those
links and use those links freely until and if you have made any
decision
to purchase. If you have decided to purchase from either of those
companies then do as follows to make sure that no $pammer gets $$$
from
your purchase because cookies are on your computer from your surfing.
For Microsoft browsers (Internet Explorer): BEFORE you click on
either
of those links, look up at the top of your browser window and click
on
"Tools", then click on "Internet Options". Under the "General" tab,
you
will see in the middle "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files". Click on
both of those last two and click OK as needed. Then click OK at the
bottom and NOW click that link for FTM or Ancestry that you want.
It's OK if the process gets disrupted or you want to do some more
looking before buying. Just start at the beginning of these
instructions
when you are ready.
Instructions are available for other browsers also such as Mozilla &
Mozilla-Firefox. Let's stop rewarding the $spammer$!
Bob
Bob,
I'd like to point out that:
Your suggested link http://www.familytreemaker.com/ (a good one with
good stuff on it) is also one click away from "FTM User Forums" which
is a link to the GenForum site. It is the very same resource I
mentioned in the first place.
And your second suggested link (another good one) is one click away
from Ancestry's affiliate program. Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com are
both owned by MyFamily.com. Just so everyone has the facts straight
about that.Robert
You're belaboring the obvious and what is commonplace knmowledge. It's not
clear what point you're attempting to make; or are you attempting to
confuse matters? Those links were chosen because they don't disguise a
Bfast URL and are therefore not polluted by the quick-buck &&& artists. I
believe I don't have to tell you who I have in mind.

Indeed. And since I was there before, I may describe why there are
such rules.
Before SGC existed, there was one newsgroup: soc.roots and then
someone decided to create alt.genealogy because he could not find
soc.roots. And in 1994, someone organized a committee to
re-organize soc.roots into many more smaller newsgroups and I was in
that committee. So, the vote occured and 7 newsgroups were created
(and many more followed after that).
At that time, each genealogy newsgroup was gatewayed to a mailing list
at gatech.edu. That server requested that no list was used for
commercial purposes. So, all newsgroups (someone in the committee
was aware of that) were voted to be not commercial. The first mailing
list (gen-ff-l) was made before the end of the restructuration and
was gatewayed to a newsgroup voted at the end of 1983
(fr.rec.genealogie), so someone was aware of that limitation and all
initial newsgroups were created to be not commercial. And that rule
was never changed.
soc.genealogy.marketplace was created later, after the lists were
moved to other servers (first to eworld then to rootsweb which was
only beginning to be known and guess what, starters of rootsweb were
also in the committee like many more people involved in rootsweb).
So, if your message is to attract people to your site and the way you
do it is to attract users to your affiliate pages, then it is against
the chart. But if someone **else** speaks about your site, someone
with no relationship to you, then it is something else. This is why
someone from FTM or selling FTM is not welcome, but a user of FTM is.
This is also why someone from TMG answering to a point about TMG or
about a new feature for TMG is welcome (because it is about the
technical aspect and not to advertise the product).
Indeed and we should all add his name to the kill file.
