Software with source citation & HTML output features
Hi,
Time for me to upgrade from "Family Tree Maker 3.0 for Windows" that I
bought about a decade ago. Upgrade to what?
Realizing there's no software that's best for everyone, I've identifed
2 features I'd like to have:
1) Ability to have a separate list of sources, and specify a source
for each event I record. When I go into my current version of FTM, I
too often find myself wondering, "Where did I get that birth date
from?", etc.
2) HTML output -- this is a rather vague requirement, but I'd like to
be able to get Web pages directly from the software, rather than
export from it & then try to Webify the output.
It looks like the current version of The Master Genealogist
(http://www.whollygenes.com) has both these features, while Family Tree Maker
2005 (http://www.familytreemaker.com) has neither. So I guess I'll go with
TMG despite the higher price & features I might not use.
Unless, that is, somebody would like to recommend some other product
they like, that has these features. There are so many of them it's
hard to take a look at them all.
Thanks.

Hi Mike,
Why not try Legacy Family Tree first - does what you want and the basic
version is free with a small cost to upgrade to full version. You can try
it out first.

I use Legacy, and elucidate where necessary in notes, but some might
find it a problem.

As to web output: I really haven't looked at direct output from TMG in
a while, although the times I used it, it was competent for what I
wanted. There is a companion program, Second Site, which will generate
web output directly from a TMG database, and is enormously flexible and
configurable: http://johncardinal.com/ss/index.htm
However, and this now gets into philosophy - I've gotten to where I
want my web posting of genealogical data to be dynamic, so I've been
using PHPGedView (http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/). It does require
a GEDCOM as an intermediate step, though it seems to work very well
with TMG GEDCOMs. And as its name implies, it requires PHP, though
that's widely available on hosting accounts. While I'd much rather it
work directly from the database, it's a great step forward from static
pages.
Standard disclaimer: No connection with any of the mentioned products

Re: Software with source citation & HTML output features
I use the Second Site software which directly works with TMG. It does a
very nice job of creating web pages and is very flexible. John Cardinal
continually upgrades it with great features. If you want to see how a
sample, I created my genealogy pages using it. There are many formats in
which to output, I happened to choose a narrative form. The URL is below
and just click on "My Family Tree Page" and explore from there. One note,
you won't find the graphics I used in the program as I designed them myself
but the output would be basically the same if you chose one of the graphics
with a border.

Hello Mike,
In my humble opinion, none of the products out there does a
particularly good job of creating HTML tree diagrams. That's why I
started TREEFIC. It's not exactly what you're looking for since it
requires that you generate a GEDCOM file and then load it into the web
site, but you might find that the results justify the extra step.
(And it's currently free.) The TREEFIC home page is at

One nice thing for those who want to insert such notes is that
Legacy lets you put comments fight in the source details where
you can make such qualifications on which part of the event data
was obtained from or included in the source.
