I would like scan old 35 mm slides. Any suggestions for such a scanner.
I have an attachment for my HP scanner but it does not work well at all.

Nancy,

You can find a lot of information about slide scanners in the
newsgroup comp.periphs.scanners. I use a Nikon Coolscan IV, but I see
that the latest model is a Coolscan V now. There are several different
brands, and all seem to have their advantages.

We got the Cool Scan V earlier this year, and it's worth every penny
IF you have a large number (hundreds or thousands) of slides or 35mm
negatives. If you have a small number, it might be more cost
effective to just have them scanned professionally somewhere, and pay
less than the cost of the scanner. But if you expect to continue
doing 35mm scans into the future, the Cool Scan V is a great option.
Not only do you get 4000ppi, but it'll do that in 38 seconds according
to the manual. My own experience is that it's pretty close to that
for an unenhanced scan. Of course if you use some of the enhancements
available (like the built-in Digital Ice), your scan times will be
increased. Still, the quality and scan times just can't be matched by
a flatbed, even with a reasonably good slide/film adapter.

I've got several thousand color slides, and the thought of trying to
do all those on our Epson flatbed with the reasonably decent slide
adapter built into the cover, was just overwhelming. Plus, the
quality is no match for the output of the Nikon. I also use VueScan
with the Cool Scan, as well as our Epson flatbed.
