Nils Gulbrandsen 1839

I am looking for information about my great great grandfather. His name was Nils Gulbrandsen and according to the 1900 census he was born in Modum in 1839. He later lived in Konnerud on a farm called Svarterud. I know he is buried at the Konnerud cemetery and I have found information about his wife Else Larsdatter and her family. I can not find any information regarding their marriage or his birth or parentage. Just wondering if anyone could be of any help. Thanks so much!

By looking for the possible church confirmation of Nils in Modum for the years 1852-1855, this Nils Gulbrandsen may be a promising candidate even thou it states that he was born in Christiania # 7 .

A Family Search for children of parents Gulbrand Nielsen/Inger Marie Monsdatter gave the following: Anton born 1837 in Christiania (Aker parish), Carl 1841, Laura 1843 and Maren 1848 – all born in Modum.

One Niels with same date of birth as indicated at confirmation in Modum was christened in same church and (most probably) by same parents as the Anton mentioned above

Niels and Else got married in Houg church of Eiker parish on 21 Nov 1862 couple # 71 . They were both staying at the farm Grøsland at the time.

In case the family of Gulbrand Nielsen and Inger Maria Monsdatter should prove to be 'your' Niels' - which I have a feeling it is - here is their marriage in Christiania (Aker parish) 2 Dec 1836 couple # 1

When Niels Gulbrandsen and Else Johanne Larsen got their firstborn – Gyda Mathilde – christened in Haug church of Eiker parish, one of her godfathers was Carl Gulbrandsen from Modum # 345 .

In my opinion this Carl most probably was the younger brother of Niels and close to confirms that the family with parents Gulbrand Nielsen and Inger Maria Monsdatter is the right one.

I’ve done some checking of the Modum local history – ‘Modums historie’, volumes IV-VI. Based on the findings combined with church and probate records in addition to censuses, I think I have been able to establish and point to reliable sources for the ancestry in Modum of Niels Gulbrandsen back to the late 17th century.

However, based on the info given already, with some effort you might be able to dig out the same information yourself, which is half ‘the fun’ I think ! On the other hand, if the language barrier is too big or you for any other reason would like to have my findings presented here, I’ll be happy to help out – just say so !

I am posting my response to your pm here, main reason being that others also might find some of this info useful in the future !

When Niels Gulbrandsen and Else Johanne Larsen had their first child Gyda Mathilde christened in Haug church of Eiker parish, one of her godfathers was Carl Gulbrandsen from Modum. This Carl most probably was the younger brother of Niels and close to confirms that the family that I have pointed to earlier, with parents Gulbrand Nielsen and Inger Maria Monsdatter, is the right one.

Carl Gulbrandsen of Modum does not show up in census 1865 from that parish. However, I think he moved to the capital Christiania in the years 1862-1865, because one person with the right name, age and place of birth is noted living at Søberggangen 2 - he was single at the time - in the parish of Vor Frelsers menighed of Christiania link .

One Anton Gulbrandsen, 30 years of age and born in Modum, was also in 1865 living in Christiania with his wife Caroline Christiansdatter from Eidsvold in Akershus County, in addition to their 1 year old son Gustav, born in Christiania link .

Anton and Caroline were married in the church Trefoldighetdskirken in Christiania 6 Oct 1865 and the fathers’ name of bridegroom and bride were given as Gulbrand Nielsen and Christian Olsen. Best men were Christian Gulbrandsen living at Hammersborg, Christiania and Carl Gulbrandsen living at Søberggangen 3, Christiania couple # 114 . Their first (and only ?) child was born in Christiania 4 Dec 1865 and christened 14 Jan 1866 at the same church # 7 .

In my opionion this firmly confirms the family ties between brothers Niels, Carl and Anton Gulbrandsen as part of the family of Gulbrand Nielsen and Inger Maria Monsdatter.

Gulbrand Nielsen and Inger Maria Monsdatter were born at farm Askim 19 Feb 1805 in Modum parish of Buskerud County # six down at page 308 and 29 Jun 1805 in Asker parish of Akershus County lower part of page respectively.

The parents of Gulbrand Nielsen were Niels Pedersen and Anne Gulbrandsdatter, born at farm Aschim in Modum 3 Apr 1768 # 29 at page 348 and at farm Mæloa in Modum 30 May 1774 # 37 page 399 respectively. They got married 17 Mar 1798 in Heggen church of Modum parish page 775 .

At census 1801 Niels Pedersen, age 33, was a schoolteacher living with family at farm Askim in Modum parish. Living at the same farm was his father Peder Hansen, a widower 72 years of age link .

The parents of Inger Maria Monsdatter were Mons Christophersen and Kari Larsdatter.

The parents of Niels Pedersen were Peder Hansen and Maren Nielsdatter. They were christened 25 Sep 1729 in Heggen church (living at farm Spone) # 60 and 20 Jun 1734 in same church of Modum parish (living at farm Aschim) # 47 respectively. They got married in Heggen church 27 Oct 1754 and were to live at farm Aschim couple # 28 .

Maren Nielsdatter died 10 Jan 1774 # 3 at page 813 .

The parents of Anne Gulbrandsdatter were Gulbrand Palmesen and Siri Nielsdatter. They were born in approx 1746 and 1740 respectively and married at Heggen church of Modum parish 16 Apr 1774 couple # 8 and they were to live at farm Mæloa.

The parents of Peder Hansen were Hans Torgersen and Anne Olsdatter. They were married at Heggen church 25 Feb 1720 fourth couple down on left page . In addition to Peder born 1729, his siblings were Maren 9 Jun 1720, Torger 5 Dec 1722, Ole 14 Feb 1725, Ole 1 Nov 1726 and Erik 6 Apr 1733.

Probable father of Hans Torgersen was Torgier Thoresen, who was buried in Modum parish 30 Dec 1714, 58 years of age – living at farm Sponelandet # 63 .
