Lars Andersen Mandahl

This is part of another forum of Dis Norge which I began in Oslo with regard to the Mandahl family. I had wondered how my ancestor Lars ANDERSEN Mandahl wound up with the surname Mandahl. Discovering he was born in Rommedal through the help of some kind people on this site I have discovered his parentage as being Anders Larsen and Johanne Pedersdatter. I understand that Mandahl could be the name he used from the farm he was on. However there is no farm in Rommedal named mandahl/Mandell but....

I did however find some very interesting information. In Rommedal there was a Johanne Mandall on farm Granberg. In 1801 she was the widow of Captain von Mandall. Her maiden name is cited as Robsahm. Looking through the FS it shows her father as being Lars Robsahm so she was obviously Johanne Larsdatter. I am wondering whether Lars' father Anders Larsen was actually her brother, or the Johanne that Anders was married to was actually her with a second marriage, though of course the surname for that Johanne would be wrong as it is cited Anders Larsen married Johanne Pedersdatter. Cannot find a brother in FS to Johanne named Anders, however it is curious that Lars used the surname Mandahl - obviously from this family in Rommedal, and that he had a son named Lauritz Engelhardt (Johanne had two brothers named Engelhardt and Laurentz) and of course Lars also had a son named Johan. Family ties or sign of respect for the family by a fellow that helped on the farm ? - Lars was not on the farm in 1801.

Hello Kymm,

According to DIS-Norge's genealogy data base DIStreff was Johanne Robsahm married to Isach Mandahl. It appears that they lived in Lier, Buskerud in 1893 and that they later moved to Romedal in Hedmark. It is therefore rather unlikely that the Mandahl name originates from Stange/Romedal. Please remember to contact the person who has submitted the data to DIStreff before you include it in your own research.

Thankyou for your reply. I don't include anything in my research until I have a couple of good sources. This was just something I came across in my search for more information. I have been wondering where the Mandahl name actually came from considering so far no one in the tree has been from that region and just found it curious with Lars son's names were very like that of Johanne Robsahms brothers!!! Leila informed me that as Lars was a master taylor he may have just added the name, so that was great information.
