Could someone please tell me, what do crosses on Christening records mean?

For example, this page has several entires with crosses next to them.

I wondered if it meant the person had died, but one entry has 2 crosses.

I have been looking around to find an answer to your question and it has been discussed at DISchat without being able to conclude. Earlier this year, this was also discussed at the Digital Archives forum for transcription of sources 36100 without any firm conclusion. It has been reported that the crosses could indicate that the child was born illegitimate, but this was not always the case. It appears that each minister may have developed his own code for these crosses and that you will have to study the individual book to find an explanation.

Thanks, Vidar.

I had hoped there might be a simple answer. Oh, well...

Hello
My ecperience is that a cross means that the person has died, often before he\she reached the age of confirmation.
