My family name is Hoggan, and I can trace my family back to 1723, in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. They seem to have been well-established by then, as handloom weavers.

I wonder if they perhaps came originally from Hogganvik? I've found a reference online to a Laurtis Knutsson, who died in Hogganvik gard no.69, in 1625. He was the owner of the Hogganvik sawmill in 1618, and was fined for selling oak trees to the Scots.

I wonder if one of the sailors involved in the trade of cereal and timber - avoiding the taxes in Stavanger- stayed in Fife...... married, settled down... abbreviated the name ofthe farm where he worked, to give himself a surname.

Does anyone have any ideas about this, or how I might investigate further?

Thanks very much

Joan Hoggan
