I want to announce the release of Ancestris v. 0.5.0. Ancestris is a genealogy program written in java. It means it can be run on any operating system, as Windows, Mac Os, and Linux (packages are also available for ubuntu, redhat, fedora users). The only requirement is to have the java virtual machine on your system. All the informations are given on the wiki web site, specially in the norvegian section.
As I said in my test message, we have been asked recently to support the norvegian language, so we created wiki pages in norvegian, but we don't speak norvegian at all, and someone has begun to translate the english pages to norvegian, but it's far from over, so help is really welcome to translate the web pages to norvegian, if you are interested about Ancestris.
Ancestris is 100% gedcom compliant. It respects totally the gedcom specifications. Ancestris works on the gedcom file itself, so if you want to exchange data with people you have no risk at all to loose informations as you transfert the gedcom file. You do not need to convert your data to something else. Ancestris comes with many plugins which extend its capabilities, and Ancestris is totally free. No charge at all, it is released under the GPL licence, which means the source code is available.
We need to translate the software to norvegian too. We have just begun. Again, if you are interested about Ancestris we have developed a tool to translate the ressources bundle files (the files which contain all the sentences, words, etc. used by Ancestris) which could be used to translate to norvegian. Ancestris is fully translated to english, french, and italian. We have begun to translate it to polish, spanish, and german. This tool is named "Trancestris".
Ancestris is used by hundreds of people specially in France, as we are french, and we have just begun to open it to other languages. I hope you will test it, and enjoy using it. We are opened to suggestions, requests, etc.. and of course bug reports. Ancestris is under heavy development, so improvements are made on a regular basic.
If you need information, and/or if you want to help, feel free to drop me a note, at "francois AT ancestris DOT org" (in english or in french please
