Ole Syversen (Stevenson), Lars Olsen, 1872 'Palmerston' NZ

Legg inn av gj04016 » 30. november 2006 kl. 10.33

My Grandfather came from Norway to New Zealand in 1872 on the ship Palmerston. (The link to the Palmerton’s passenger list page is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... erston.htm )
He was 6 years of age and traveled with his family. The entry of the family on the ships passenger record is as follows:-

Nyhus Ole S 29 Farm Labourer
Guri 27
Lars 6
Ole 3

Vidar Overlie has kindly found his birth record (http://www.arkivnett.ol.no/dbsok/ndetal ... Post=45086 ) showing his name as Lars Olsen. In New Zealand he was known as Losh Stevenson but this must be an anglicization of his Norwegian name (Lars = Losh) plus his fathers patronymic name (Syversen = Stevenson)
His father's name on the ship’s record is Ole S Nyhus. I believe the S stands for Syversen ie his name would be Ole Syversen Nyhus at the time he migrated, - however his son’s birth record shows him as Ole Syversen Langrusten. (I understand that Nyhus & Langrusten would be ‘farm names’ and change according to where he was living & working) He was born on 8 October 1843. The family came from Vågå parish, Oppland County His wife's name was Guri Larsdatter.
In New Zealand Lars later married Martina Mattison who migrated from Sweden as a child on the same voyage
If anybody is researching these people or is able to give me any additional information regarding my ancestors or their family – I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Lars Olsen's brother Ole Olsen was born in 1868.

In 1865, Ole Syverson's parents and siblings lived at Langrusten. I believe the current name of the farm is Langrusti. If you go to Norge i bilder and type in Langrusti at Stedsnavn and click Søk it will bring you to a photo of the farm.

Thanks Vidar, From this information it appears that Ole was no longer living on his parents’ farm at the date of this census. I have the year of his marriage to Guri Larsdatter recorded as 1865 – the same year as the census so I guess he may have been living elsewhere with his wife.
With regard to his sister Ragnild - I understand that she was also going to go to New Zealand. She had boarded the ship with her brother Ole and his family when she suddenly changed her mind and went ashore again. Instead she went to Tistedal where she met Johan Johansen and married him - and never saw her brother again.
Regards
John

The reference date for the 1865 census was 31 st Dec. 1865. If they married in 1865 they should be recorded as married in the 1865 census. I have found the following two candidates Guriliving at the Volden farm and Ole working on the Fillingsø farm.

Hi Vidar – It appears that I may have the year of their marriage incorrect, but I guess it could have been the following year (1866) as they are recorded on the birth record of their son (Lars Olsen – my grandfather) as being married when he was born on 23 February 1866.
Am I correct in guessing that they may have been living in different places when he was born? - His mother’s (Guri’s) place of residence is recorded as Øivolden (is this the same as Volden?) and, while his father’s (Ole Syversen’s) place of residence is not recorded it appears that at the time of the 1865 Census record, that you have referred me to, he was living at Fillingsø farm. – I guess they may have married some time between the end of December 1865 & February 23 1866.
Guri had a second son in 1869 and a further six children in New Zealand. She died sometime between the ages of 33 and 40 in South Otago. (The poor woman was probably exhausted! :( ) Ole married again after her death.
Could I ask another couple of questions?
Can you tell me what the phrase “Ind Hsf Søster” means? (I can understand Søster = Sister but was unclear about “Hsf”
Also – I have Ole Syversen’s father’s parents as Ole J Nyhus (1780-1857) and Maut Thorsdotter (1786 – 1892 – she lived to 106!?) – (& their children as Syver, Tord, Nils, Arne, Ole, Ellef, Jakop & Ragnild.) I wondered if anybody had any info about these people - & what the J in Ole J Nyhus stands for?
Thanks
John

Hi John, see now that my message above could have misled you. Ole and Guri found in the 1865 census were both married (gift = g). So your year of marriage is likely to be correct. It might be that Ole is recorded under the Fillingsø farm in the 1865 census because he was working there.

I do not know the Vågå area well enough, but Øivolden and Volden could be the same farm or that Øivolden was a cotter’s farm under Volden. You could try to address this in the Vågå forum where I have made a reference to this thread.

Hsf = husfader, the father of the house (the owner of the place). Otto Jørgensen has generated a good Norwegian – American Dictionary.

This family is included in Tor Onshus online genealogy data base and he may have some more information.

As correctly stated by Kai Kveum, the 1865 census for Vågå (Vaage) at Langrusten farm, Syver Olsen and Brit Olsdtr lived there with their children Barbro, Marit, Ole, Ragnhild, Syver and Anne. But there was another child, Tholine Bastine. Tholine was born Des. 7th 1835, christened Feb 13th 1836 in Kristiansund. Her confirmation was in Vågå Oct. 13th 1850. In both “Ministerial”-books her parents are Syver Olsen and Brit Olsdtr. from Vågå. Tholine was also “godmother” (“fadder”) for her sister Barbros son.

Tholine married Lars Gustav Larsen from Sweden Aug. 28th 1864 in Berg, Østfold. (Tistedalen was part of Berg parish.). In 1870 census, Tholine and Lars Gustav Larsen and three children lived in Lillehammer. Also Ragnhild Syversdtr. lived with the family at that date. Ragnhild must be Tholines sister.

Tholine and Lars Gustav are grand-grandparents of my wife, Britt (b. 1949). I have information of that branch of the family tree if interested.
