I have not been able to find a family that emigrated from from Vang, Hedmark (to New Zealand) in the "Emigrants from Oslo" lists.
Could they have departed from a different port and, if so, which one(s) would be most likely?
The family members emigrated about 1877. They were:
Johannes JOHANSEN (or JOHANNESEN), his wife Sedsel OLSDATTER, and some of their children (Mikkel or Michael, Martin, and Ludvig).
The parents are found in the 1865 census with their older children:
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ft ... 50&lnr=000
Martin and Ludvig were born after the census - Martin b. 1866, and Ludvig b. about 1870.
Thanks.
Pip

Hi Pip!
The emigrant database is not complete.
Protocol no. 6 31.05.1876 - 29.04.1880
contains 13766 persons (inkl. 1413 double registrations).
Abt 4840 persons missing in this database.
Maybe your family should have been there?
It might be that you could get someone to do a lookup in the original listings to see if they are there. These protocols are in the National Archive in Oslo, on microfilm.

Re: Emigrants from Vang, Hedmark, to New Zealand
Thanks to both of you. That probably explains everything!
How much might it cost to get someone to do a lookup in the original listings at the National Archives, and who would I need to contact?
BTW, this is not my family, but a family I am researching in the hope of publishing the memoirs of one of their descendants. The eldest son of Johannes and Sedsel went to America (where he changed his name to John HOLT) and I have recently discovered a whole lot about him online:
An Immigrant’s Anguish: The Americanization of Johanes Johansen
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wmh/pdf ... zeidel.pdf
It's a really sad story.
Shame the info on his parents isn't as freely available... but I guess that's my task!
Thanks.

Is it possible that the parish registers might have recorded their emigration?

Re: Emigrants from Vang, Hedmark, to New Zealand
Hi Pip,
I would think there is a fair chance that the parish register will have their emigration from Vang. The parish register to look for should be Vang, Ministerialbøker, no. 15 on this link which cover the period 1871-1885.
Currently, the Norwegian parish registers are being scanned and made available on internet. This is a significant task that will take some time to complete, but a lot is already available at The Digital Archives. The above parish register is not online yet. A copy version (klokkerbok) is available but it does not include emigration.
