"My grandfather, John Staff, was born on a farm near Ringsaker, Norway, May 28, 1874. The entire family (at that time) immigrated to the U.S. in 1888, I believe, after selling the Ringsaker farm.
According to a family genealogy, great grandfather Thomas Staff was born in Ringsaker, in 1847 and married Mathea Johannesdatter Vindjue. Children included daughter Agnetta Staff, July 7, 1869, son Mathias Staff, July 10, 1871, my grandfather, and Elizabeth Staff, July 26, 1876.
My husband, son and his family will be in Norway with me in early September. We plan on visiting the church in Ringsaker (if we can locate it) as we believe there are family headstones in the cemetery. We would like to see if the photo we have of the supposed house is from the farm, but do not know if the farm, Mo, is the one referred to in family stories.
Any help would be greatly appreciated."

Beatrice Christiansen

Beatrice Christiansen was born a true pioneer at the homestead of her parents, John and Lilly Staff, on Dec. 10, 1905. On Feb. 6, 2003, she passed away to join a host of loved ones who had preceded her on their final journey to live forever with the company of the Saints in the house of her Heavenly Father.

Bea was baptized at the family homestead by a circuit-riding preacher because churches and preachers were few and far between in those long ago days. She grew up as a farm and ranch girl - riding horseback to country school and then finished her high school days in Chinook, Blaine Co., Montana, and the family hometown. Mom had an older sister, Martha, and three brothers, Tom, Jim and Matt Staff, all deceased.

Beatrice and Hugo Christiansen were married in 1928 and together they raised their family of two boys, Hugo Jr., Tom, and daughter Marilyn. Hugo Sr. passed away in 1986.

Although Beatrice had been a county schoolteacher before she married, she never stopped teaching. Her teaching continued on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends for all of her life. That teaching drew deeply from her love of her Lord, her love of life and the love of her family and friends. Bea often questioned but seldom judged the acts of others, whether family or friends. Her greatest joy was in those same family and friends, whether sharing a meal or just taking time to visit.

We will miss her, but though we weep, we will not mourn, for Mom was ready for her next journey. In her long and faithful life. Until her last days, she read avidly, loved her family and friends with true passion, and always looked ahead for what tomorrow might bring. Bea often questioned but seldom judged the acts of others, whether family or friends. Mom, we'll not say goodbye but only "Until we meet again." You have lived a wonderful life and you have shared that wonder with us all. We love you with heart and soul and cherish our memories with you and Dad.

Beatrice is survived by one son, Hugo, his wife Jean and their children, Howard of Billings and Belgrade, Karen of Livingston, Laurie and husband Salvin Gebhard of Laurel and their son Edison Gunnar Gebhard.

A second son, Thomas "Tom," is deceased. His children, Dennis and wife Sarah and their two children, Thomas and Timothy, live in Billings. Tom's daughter, Dodie and husband Dale Bernard and their two children, Brandey Lee and Nicole, live in Newtown, N.D.

Bea's daughter Marilyn, now deceased, with her husband Jack Murray brought four new grandchildren to her family: Jeffrey of Billings, Leslie and husband Clifford Cooke of Billings and their three children, Erik of Washington D.C., Amy, her husband Josh Thill of Eugene, Ore., and Jeremy of Billings. Their second son, Gerry, is deceased. Their third son, Lindsey Murray and his wife Sonia have two boys, Taran and Zach, and they reside on a ranch southeast of Bridger.

Many children of friends have also been adopted by Grandma Bea, who became their grandmother or Aunt Bea, and we honor them all as members of her family. Also we honor and thank the many members of staff and volunteers of St. Johns Lutheran Home for their love and kindness to Grandma Bea; she truly loved you all.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 24th Street West and Lewis in Billings. In Chinook, a service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the American Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Kuper Memorial Cemetery in Chinook.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Foundation or Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Billings or charity of choice.

Smith's West Funeral Chapel in Billings is in charge of arrangements.

CHINOOK - Frank Ramberg, 61, lifetime resident of Chinook, died Aug. 14,

1995, at Northern Montana Hospital due to natural causes.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, August 18, in the Lloyd Sweet

Auditorium of the Chinook High School. Burial will follow at Kuper Memorial

Cemetery.

Ramberg was born to Harry and Lena (Albrecht) Ramberg on March 21, 1934, in

Chinook.

He graduated from Chinook High School in 1953.

He served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo.

Ramberg had worked at DePriest Trucking of Chinook and was presently working

as a heavy equipment operator for Pike Construction of Chinook.

Ramberg is survived by his mother, Lena Ramberg of Laurel; tho brothers,

Harry Ramberg of Chinook, and David Ramberg of Basin, Wyo.; 10 sisters, Anna

Thorp of Kalispell, Myrtle Franzen and Mildren Dawson both of Chinook, Carolyn

Rosenbaum of Coram, Eileen Gachne of Puyallup, Wash., Linda MacKenstadt of

Whitefish, Erna Guertzgen of Chester, Carla Hunt of Laurel, Mary Ellen Baker of

Harlem, Susan Sargent of Kennewick, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and

friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Ramberg, in 1973; and two

brothers, Chris Ramberg in 1945 and Warren Ramberg in 1981.

Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.

Hans Henry Hofeldt, 87, of Chinook, a rancher, died of natural causes Sunday at a Chinook nursing home.
His funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chinook High School auditorium, with burial in Kuper Memorial Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Chinook Senior Center. Edwards Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Hans Henry Hofeldt was born on July 8, 1921, to Henry and Alvina (Struve) Hofeldt. He was raised on the family ranch in the Bear Paw Mountains south of Lloyd, along with four brothers and two sisters. Hans attended the country school known as Maddux School, Lloyd School and Chinook High School until 1942. After high school, Hans continued to work on the ranch north of Lloyd.
Hans married Mary Sattleen on Feb. 19, 1944. To this union four children were born, Kenneth Lee, Donald George, Mary Laraine, and Connie Lynn. They lived at the Runyan place with Hans' mother. In the spring of 1944, they went to the Corrigan place and herded sheep for two months, and then moved to the old Crumley place. In 1945, the ranches were split between the children. Hans leased the ranch they lived on for three years and, in 1948, he bought it from the estate. He continued to live there until his stroke in the fall of 2006.
Hans and Mary raised sheep and Hereford cattle. Although their ranching experience began with sheep in 1944, Hans got rid of the sheep and went to Hereford cattle in the late '50s or early '60s.
In the '80s, they changed from Hereford to Angus. He always saved his replacement heifers, that way he never had to buy any cattle. Hans was a very wise cattleman, sheep man and farmer. His animals always came first. If there was a storm, everything was in the family's place and out of the weather. Hans knew his cattle as well as a mother knows her children. He spent a lot of time with them, knowing each and every one individually.
In the fall of 1972, Hans purchased the Loney place and farmed wheat, barley and oats. He truly enjoyed the ranch life and believed in working extremely hard, and keeping the ranch neat and tidy. Hans could do anything, from ranching and farming to carpentry, electrical work, welding and being a mechanic. He was a very talented and smart man.
Hans loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them all. He always would take the time out of his busy day to play with them or just take them for a ride through the cattle.
Hans served for many years on the school board for the Lloyd School, was an Eagles member, was a member of the Hereford Association, and enjoyed helping his kids and grandkids with 4-H projects. He thoroughly enjoyed going to bull sales around the state, playing cards, dancing at all the Lloyd and Cleveland dances and, especially in his later years, hunting antelope with his friends from Virginia.
Hans always had a passion for traveling and flying, but never did get much of an opportunity to do so. He did get the chance to fly to Alaska with a friend and experience the ranching life up there. It was quite an occurrence, and he had a lot of fun learning the different ways of ranching.
Hans leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Mary; two daughters, Mary (Sam) Carter and Connie (Mike) Copenhaver, both of Chinook; six grandchildren, Bob (Rosanne) Kleinjan of Portland, Ore., Chad Jamieson of California, Jesse Jamieson of California, Carrie Jamieson of Chinook, Tina (Russell) Alisch of Chinook and Katelyn Copenhaver of Chinook; and four great-grandsons, Chase, Tory, Gavin and Ayden. Hans also is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Hans was preceded in death by his sons, Kenneth and Donald; four infant siblings; a 7-year-old sister, Margaretha; his parents; brothers Roy, Ben, Lawrence and Paul Hofeldt; and sisters Christine Miller and Hilda Drugge.
Memorials are suggested to Sweet Memorial Nursing Home or the donor's choice.

ROBERT DOLAN



Robert J. Dolan, 82, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 8, 2001, of a apparent heart attack. Vigil services were held on Sunday, August 12, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Chinook. Funeral Mass was recited on Monday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Gabriel's Catholic Church Burial with military honors followed in the Kuper Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Gift of Life Housing in Great Falls (PO Box 7008, Great Falls, MT 59406-7008), an organization providing temporary residential quarter for families of cancer patients undergoing away-from-home treatment, or to the charity of one's choice. Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook was in charge of arrangements.

Robert was born on April 12, 1919, at Lloyd to Joseph and Lillian (Evans) Dolan. He attended grade school at the Lloyd School and high school in Chinoook, graduating from Chinook High School in 1937. He worked for the Miller Brothers Ranch until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He was attached to the 186th Infantry Division and served in the Philippines and other Asian theatre locations until his honorable discharge on November 27, 1945.

Upon his return he was employed at the Sugar Beet Factory in Chinook. He later joined the Milk River Production Credit Association, serving in various positions including manager and president, until retireing in 1984.

On November 30, 1948, he married Julia Sattleen in Chinook and the couple continued to live in Chinook where they raised their four children.

An active member of his community, Robert was a member of the Chinook Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, eagles Club, and the VFW. He was an advocate of the region's agriculture economy and was instrumental in establinhing the annual Farmer-Rancher Appriciation Night, as well as supporting local bull sales and feeder tours. He was also influential in the funding and construction of the current community swimming pool.

Bob was a ardent supporter of the Chinook school system, serving as a school board member, and enjoyed following high school athletic teams. He was also a keen fisherman and bird hunter.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Julia of Chinook; sons, Joseph of Glasgow and Patrick of Seattle, WA; daughters, Jan Dolan of Scottsdale, AZ and Carol Wachter of Beaverton, OR; sister Lorena Curtis of Portland, OR; sister-in-law, Mary Therese Dolan of Sacramento, CA; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beth Mundt; brothers Bill and Ed.

When Speeding Automobile Crashes
"Death rode the Wild Horse Trail 25 miles north of Havre early Sunday morning, snuffed out the lives of four persons and brought Hill county's 1955 highway fatality toll to six lives.
"Victims of the highway accident were all residents of Chinook, Raymond J. Dineen, 30; Jonas (Edward) Sattleen, 28, Ole Kvasager, 27; and Lola Hall, 16.
"Dineen and Kvasager were believed killed instantly, while Satleen lived at a Havre hospital until 7:15 a. m. Sunday and the girl, Lola Hall, died of her injuries about 15 minutes after reaching the hospital.
"Highway patrol officers investigating the accident said Dineen, who was driving the 1954 two-door Plymouth sedan, ran off the left side of the Wild Horse trail while entering a right turn. The car went about 200 feet in the barrow pit before crashing into an approach road embankment about five feet high. Impact telescoped the front end of the car, the front wheels folding back almost under the floor boards. The car frame buckled downward. As one individual remarked Sunday while inspecting the wreck, "about all that can be salvaged is the trunk lid."
"After crashing into the approach road embankment, the car apparently went into the air and crashed down on top of the approach road on its wheels.
"Patrol officers reported the broken speedometer stuck at 80 miles an hour and blamed excessive night speed for the fatal accident that claimed four lives.
"Impact of the crash drove the steering wheel into Dineen's chest and officers believe he died instantly.
"Sattleen, in the front seat, crashed into the instrument panel and received internal injuries, a broken jaw and multiple fractures to both arms and legs. He lived until 7:15 a.m. Sunday.
"Kvasager apparently died instantly of a fractured skull and internal injuries.
"The 16-year-old girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hall, sustained a broken neck, compound leg fractures, and a fractured jaw, and lived about 15 minutes after reaching a Havre hospital.
"Patrol officers said their investigation indicated the party left Chinook sometime after 11 p.m. Saturday, planning to attend a dance at Cottonwood, northwest of Havre. The girl, had finished an evening shift at a Chinook cafe where she had been employed as a waitress.
"Mervin Johnson, "Bud" Campbell, and Ernest Hanson of Havre discovered the wrecked car and its grisly cargo of dead and injured. Realizing there was little they could do for the injured man and girl, they drove to Havre to summon highway patrol officers and medical assistance.
"Patrol officers and ambulance attendants were at the scene about 1 a.m. and after removing the dead and injured from the wreck said it was the "worst mess" they had been called upon to handle since inception of ambulance service in Havre.
"Sunday after the wrecked car had been towed to the rear of the Bear Paw motors in Havre word of the tragedy spread and a steady stream of people inspected the wrecked and blood splattered death car. Today the car was near the front of the Farmers Union building on First street.

"My grandfather, John Staff, was born on a farm near Ringsaker, Norway, May 28, 1874. The entire family (at that time) immigrated to the U.S. in 1888, I believe, after selling the Ringsaker farm.
According to a family genealogy, great grandfather Thomas Staff was born in Ringsaker, in 1847 and married Mathea Johannesdatter Vindjue. Children included daughter Agnetta Staff, July 7, 1869, son Mathias Staff, July 10, 1871, my grandfather, and Elizabeth Staff, July 26, 1876.
My husband, son and his family will be in Norway with me in early September. We plan on visiting the church in Ringsaker (if we can locate it) as we believe there are family headstones in the cemetery. We would like to see if the photo we have of the supposed house is from the farm, but do not know if the farm, Mo, is the one referred to in family stories.
Any help would be greatly appreciated."

Jeg er veldig ,veldig takknemlig for all hjelp fra deg,du har virkelig satt meg på gli.
Det er svært viktig for meg å finne ut av dette. Denne familiegreina er ikke stor i Norge , men i USA er de mange.
