Jeg har brukt dette forumet før når det gjelder å finne slektninger i USA. Særlig vil jeg takke Margith Bakke i Minnesota.
Nå har jeg et nytt navn:
Min oldefar hadde ei søster som tidlig mistet sin mann. To av sønnene deres het Lars og Helge Svendsen. Min oldefar flyttet til Larvik og Helge ble gårdsgutt på gården han kjøpte, Gjelstad.
Den andre sønnen,Lars Svendsen, f. 26.01.1858, på Norumheia i Råde, Østfold, ble etterhvert sjømann, hoppet av båten og bosatte seg i New York, Yonkers der han jobbet på en sukkerfabrikk. Jeg har flere brev fra Lars til Helge som bekrefter dette. I det siste brevet Helge mottok stod det at han hadde giftet seg med Sofie Christiansen fra Kristiansand.
Pga disse opplysningene har jeg funnet ham i folketellinger i New York bl.a. i 1910. Da bodde ham sammen med Sophia Swanson på adressen Yonkers Ward 4, Westchester, New York. Han kalte seg Louis Swanson. Han hadde to barn: Albert og Ralph, født etter 1903.
I 1930 bodde de på samme adresse, men da uten barn. Jeg prøver å finne hvordan det gikk med barna etterpå, om det var flere barn og hvor de bosatte seg, og gjerne noe mer om Lars Og Sofie også. Lars er jo søskenbarnet til bestefaren min, og det ville derfor være interessant å komme i kontakt med etterkommerne (dersom det nå finnes noen).

Howard A. Swansen, 83, of NYS Rt. 436, Ossian passed away at his home Saturday evening, Aug. 20, 1994, after a long illness.
Born in Yonkers, NY on Dec. 31, 1910, he was the son of Louis and Sophie (Christiansen) Swansen. He had resided in this area for many years.

He was a graduate of Syracuse University Forest Rangers School and the NY Botanical Garden College in the Bronx, NY. He had served with the U.S. Forest Service and was a horticulturist with the NYS Department of Agriculture employed as the Regional Inspector of area nurseries until his retirement in 1966.

Howard was a veteran of W.W. II, serving with the US Army as a Tech. Sgt. in the 538th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a member of the Daniel Goho Post #87 of the American Legion in Dansville.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Marie (Ralph) Swansen and Agnes (George) Swansen, both of Yonkers; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Ralph and George Swansen.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville, with the Rev. Bruce Torrey of St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Dansville officiating. There were no prior calling hours.

- Agnes Swansen (nee Gallagher) of Yonkers died on Friday, July 18, 2003 at age 85. Born on November 30, 1917 to William and Agnes (Mann) Gallagher in Glasgow, Scotland. Mrs. Swansen was the owner and operator of A&G Swansen's Clothing Apparel on Lake Avenue in Yonkers for over 20 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, she was a sales clerk for W.T. Grants in Getty Square. On May 31, 1941, she married George Swansen in Yonkers; he died in 1991. Aggie loved her trips to Atlantic City but enjoyed her four great-granddaughters: Amanda, Samantha, Cassandra and Alexandra. She is survived by her children: Diane McGown of Yonkers and Robert Swansen of Hayward, California and her four grandchildren: Nancy, Scott, Nicole and C.J. She is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews She was predeceased by her brother Jack Gallagher and her son-in-law, John McGown, who died in 2001. Visiting hours will be at the Whalen & Ball FH on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 22nd at 10:30 AM, Rev. David Lothrop officiating. John is also survived by his mother-in-law Agnes Swansen of Yonkers; his son-in-law Angel Herrran and by his future daughter-in-law Jaine Mellett. Mr. McGown was the nephew of Mrs. Claire (Charles) Demmler of California, the uncle of Keith, Kellie and Stephen. Det er ikke bare DIS medlemmer som hjelper til her. Jeg er ikke medlem.

Du kan være glad at de kalte seg Swansen, og ikke hadde et meget vanlig navn som Olson/Hanson osv. For det er ikke lett å følge personer etter 1930 i staten New York.
