Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Fri., Aug. 20, for Evelyn Holmvik, 81, Oldham, who died on Aug. 16, 2010, after a battle with cancer. The Rev. Becky Senner will officiate in Oldham Lutheran Church at Oldham.

Evelyn Leckey was born on April 6, 1929, at Manchester to William and Lucille (Smith) Leckey. She graduated from DeSmet High School in 1947 and attended General Beadle College in Madison. She taught in the Lennox, Sioux Falls and Oldham public school systems. She married Alfred Holmvik in 1953, and they farmed in the Oldham area. She was an active member of Oldham Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra (Gary) Drost of Luverne, Minn., and Bonnie (Brian) Frisbee of Sioux Falls; two sons, David of Oldham, and Paul (Cindy) of Apple Valley, Minn.; eight grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred; and two brothers, Jim and Wally Leckey.

Memorials may be given to the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls or the Oldham Food Bank in Oldham.

The Johnson-Henry Funeral Chapel of Oldham is in charge of arrangements.

Hope you read English. I used to read a bit of Norwegian, but it's gone now.
Magda Oliva (May) and Jenny Arnolda were the oldest two surviving children of 10. 2 children born between Magda and Jenny died in infancy, another died in later childhood. 7 survived to adulthood. Edvard Olaus Riise (8 May 1865-7 December 1959) was their father and Jørgine Louise Johansen (3 June 1864-11 June 1937), their mom.
Magda Riise (6 June 1884-14 July 1968) was my grandmother. She was in Seattle-Tacoma WA by 1915, getting a divorce from a musician named George Johnson.

I haven't done the research for exact dates, but around 1925, Magda married my grandfather, Albert Willis Nicley (pronouced Nisely). My mom was born 12 January 1927, in Seattle. Gramma was 43 at the time and Gloria May was her only child. Mom died in October 1981, and Gramma died in 1968, both in Seattle. She was a sweet woman, and was an extraordinary seamstress. She was the best gramma and loved her 3 grandchildren more than she could ever say. She loved a good time (selskap?) as her dad did, and went back to Norway at least 3 times that I know of. Once in 1957, once in the late 40s, and the first time to get Tante Jenny.

Jenny (10 March 1891-August 1979) was about 17 and met Ingbart Kløften, a baker and competitive archer who was from Bodø. He was also 26 and married. She had a child out of wedlock, which was very mortifying to her mother, Louise. Louise disowned Jenny, and her daughter, Reidun was taken from her and Louise raised Reidun as her own daughter.

My gramma came and got Jenny. I don't know exactly when Jenny and May went their separate ways.
All I ever heard of Silas was that he was a wonderful man who loved Jenny deeply. She was traumatised over her loss of Reidun, she never referred to her as her daughter, always her sister. When Silas found out about Reidun many years after their marriage, he cried and cried. He asked her why she hadn't told him straight away so they could go back to Norway, up to Gulvik, get Reidun and raise her as their own child. Jenny had been shamed so badly by her mom, she couldn't even admit to Reidun she was her mother. My mom's cousins and my Tante Molla (Ingeborg) told me Tante Jenny came back to Norway once and had no memory of the language. She had no other children.
I remember Tante Jenny. She had a real sweetness about her. I don't remember if I ever met Silas. They owned a pharmacy in Sioux City IA.

The Holmvik lead was a dead end. Wrong Magda.
