Help with translating record
I have found my ancestor John Jacob Andersen in the Oslo city directories living at Maridalsveien 188 in Oslo from the years 1903 through 1918. It appears he owns the property.
I have found a record that does indeed show [I think] buying the property on Feb 5 1903. Can someone confirm that is correct?
It also appears that he is paying the loan off and then it looks like he sells or transfers the property to Josephine Andersen on Nov 8 1921. Is this correct and is there any other information regarding my ancestor during this transfer?
Then on Jan 25 1923, his daughter Emma Arnoldi buys the property from Josephine?
Based on these transactions, is it possible that John Jakob Anderson has died between 1921 and 1923 and that is why he does not own the property? Unfortunetly the city directories stop after 1918 and then continue in 1927. John Jakob Anderson is not listed in 1927.
The links for the records are listed below and found on ARKIVVERKET DIGITALARKIVET.

Re: Help with translating record

I have tried to translate the texts with some help from Google Translate. The text from 1921 I did not find.
5/2 1903

25/1 1923

Re: Help with translating record
Thanks for your help in translating. in
Your information and confirmation helps me so much.
In summary:
Johan buys the property at auction on Jan 22 1903 for 3850 Krona. Based on city directories he is owner and resident until 1918 [Last record I can find, so I know he is still living]
Sept 1 1921- Recording on page 36 of document it appears that Johan sells/transfers property to Josephine Anderson. I have also used Google Translation and what I get out of it is that Josephine will allow Johan Andersen to live at Maridalsveien 188, maybe until his death? Any ideas on this?
25/1/1923 Then Emma [daughter] inherits?? property from probate? I am a little confused on this because it appears Emma has "Obligation" to Josephine Anderson and has paid money to her.
Anyway if Emma Arnoldi receives/inherits/purchases property at probate, can one assume that her father Johan Anderson has died between 1/9/1921 and 25/1/1923?
Does probate happen within months of death in Norway? [I also am trying to locate his death record.]
Thanks again in advance for any information concerning Johan Jakob Anderson, born 1841 in Sweden.

Re: Help with translating record

I try once more. I hope you understand it. Old fashion Norwegian writing you know.
Agreement November 4, 1921 whereby former fishmonger Johan Andersen agrees, that Miss Josephine Andersen as a substitute for the work she has done without payment to him in later years, stays in the current apartment, 1 room and kitchen, as long as she lives and free of charge and that she so long as he lives, will provide him work without compensation. Apartment value is set to 15, - pr. month.

Re: Help with translating record
I understand completely because I have struggled with this for 2 hours before asking for help. And I was so wrong. Thanks for clearing this up for me. [BTW: Josephine had been living with Johan Anderson for years and I could not figure out their relationship.
Just one more question regarding probate: Does probate happen within months of death in Norway? I ask because I am trying to find when Johan Jakob Anderson died and this helps give me a timeline.
Again thanks so much for your help.

Re: Help with translating record
Two more things that might interest you.
In the right margin of Jan 25, 1925 you will find a note of a prenuptial of Sept 7 1912 when leather worker Franz Arnoldi marries doweresse Emma Ingeborg Christine Olsen born Andersen: They are going to have entirely seperate estate.
April 26 1925 Mrs Emma is a foreigner (not-Norwegian) and is granted permission to be the owner of this property by the Dept. of Commerce. This indicates a) that Mr. Arnoldi is not a Norwegian Citizen. When Emma married him, she lost her Norwegian citizenship and gained his. And b) foreign citizens were not allowed to own property in Norway.

Re: Help with translating record
I am so thrilled with all the information everyone has given me. Today I have received so much and am so indebted to everyone.
I have worked on this family for 5 years following them from Sweden to Norway in 1887.
Emma indeed was born in Sweden. She came to Norway with her parents.
I have been spending the last few hours trying to translate Johan Jakob's probate record.
This is what I think it says:
Died of ............?Ulleraal sy
John Jacob has 4 adult [living] children. 1 is here [Emma] and 3 are in America. 1 other died? Owned or lived....17 years Maridalsveien? Has 2 bank books, one is 2100Kr. and other is 700 Kr........................
How close am I in my translation?
And again I really appreciate all the time everyone has given me.

Re: Help with translating record
He died in the hospital which is named "Ullevaal sykehus".
3 of the children in America, but one of them is probably dead because there has been 17 years since heard from.
Owns the house in Maridalsveien 188.
