Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter married in Christiania between 1873 and 1878. I have one date of 30 August 1873, but have not established if this is correct. If so their first child, Anton (who's birth in 1879 I also can't find) was born a number of years after their marriage!! Hence why I wondered if they were married than 1873, and despite purchasing Gunda's death certificate (They had immigrated to New Zealand) I have been unable to find any record of Gunda's birth in Norway. She was definitely born in Norway and death certificate states parents as being Peder Hansen and Guri.
Thankyou for any help,
Kymm

Hi Kymm,
It appears that some more information about Gunda and Erik is available at Rootsweb mailing list for Oppland.

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Thankyou very much for your reply. I had not included the information regarding who I think may be her parents as I am not sure whether it is correct. It certainly fits that her parents were Peder Tordsen and Guri Evensdatter, and the marriage record would back this up. This would verify that the information on Gunda's death certificate in New Zealand regarding her father's surname was incorrect and he was in fact Peder Tordsen and not Peder Hansen as her death certificate states. I thought the best way of doing so was trying to find a record of her marriage to Erik Olsen in Oslo, Norway. Would you have any other suggestions?
Thankyou once again,
Kymm

Hi,
I think FS gives their wedding here http://tinyurl.com/rns94 http://tinyurl.com/gwkad I checked the source that was given as ref, 'Oslo fylke, Trefoldighet, Ministerialbok nr. III 1 (1858-1874), Ekteviede 1874' but unfortunately records from 1874 of this book stops in April that year. I don't think the book that contains the continued marriage records has been scanned yet. Sorry about that.

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Hi again,
While I'm at it; this is probably Gunda's birth/christening at Nordre Land, Opland in 1850 http://tinyurl.com/mcrvv So far the scanned church records from Opland has lagged a little behind, so to veryfy FS you'll need some patience or ask someone to look it up for you.

I should have checked Vidar's link to Rootsweb first; you have this info already. My fault !
Good luck in your further search anyway !

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Kymm,
I would first try to compile as much New Zealand information as possible about this couple before looking at Norwegian records. Do you know when they came to New Zealand and when and where their children were born etc. I was not able to find them in the 1893 New Zealand Electoral Roll or the New Zealand Society of Genealogists Index.

Hi Vidar and Kjell,
Thankyou so much for all the help you have given me. I have now established that the death certificate gave Gunda's father the wrong surname!!! Now I can try and go further on. Gunda was my gg grandmother - known as Gunda Ericksen in NZ. I have traced her husband's family back a long way, but was really stuck on her - obviously because the death certificate gave the wrong surname for her father.
Once again thankyou, you are very kind.

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Hello Kymm,
Did Gunda remarry since she was known as Gunda Ericksen in New Zealand? If she was married to Erik Olsen I would expect her known as Gunda Olsen.

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Hi Vidar,
Yes it is confusing isn't it
I can assure you when I first began searching this family I was looking for Gunda's husband as Erik Ericksen (which he was known as in NZ). She was Gunda Ericksen by marriage, then of course her death certificate threw me with her father's name being incorrect. I then discovered the use of Norwegian patronymic naming system and figured it out. Gunda's husband Erik Olsen/Ericksen was born to Ole Eriksen who immigrated to NZ aboard the 1872 Hovding with his wife Anna (nee Soerensdatter) and many of Erik's siblings. Due to English naming practices Ole Eriksen's children all became Eriksen's rather than Olsens taking on their father's surname on entry to NZ so the family name conformed!!! Erik did not immigrate till a few years following his family (to date despite much searching I have not found Erik, Gunda or their son Anton on any NZ shipping records
I do however have in possession Erik's naturalisation certificate, death certificate and second marriage certificate. (There were no confirmed known children to his second marriage). I have a comprehensive sourced tree on the Ericksen family, however was brickwalled with Gunda and you have all helped me greatly.
Thank you very very much.
Kymm

Re: Erik Olsen and Gunda Pedersdatter
Hi Kymm,
Yes, it happens that names can be very different in the new country
John Parsons, Norwegians in New Zealand, has Erik Eriksen from Odalen naturalised 20.03.1884, age 34. He was a farmer in Norsewood.
Both Gunda and Erik Eriksen are included in the 1893 New Zealand Electoral Roll.
