Axel Wilhelm Berntsen

Hi,

I am helping a friend, she is looking for the following birth record:

Axel Wilhelm Berntsen, Born 19 Jan 1883 in Arendal

Father: Bernt Johan Eriksen
Mother: Marie Elisabeth Andersen

Axel arrived in America in 1910 and lived in Brooklyn, NY.

Three different records says he was Born in Arendal, and two records give the date of birth as 19 Jan 1883.

I have looked through the records in Arendal but do not find him, so maybe he was Born NEAR Arendal.

Can anyone help?

Mvh,

Brian

Hi

Might this be Aksel entering Ellis Island March 13, 1910 and named Amsin Berntsen? He is a sailor and this would explain why he isn't found leaving Norway.
Amsin is not a Norwegian name and I guess it might be a misunderstanding of Aksel?
His father is noted as Mr. Berntsen, but this might have been written because the one who wrote it would have expected father and son to have the same surname.
Address is Arendal.

Hi

The man listed before "Amsin" is also said to be from Arendal, but he is found in Dybvaag in the 1900 census.

Hi Vivi,

I found this immigration record:

Aksel Berentsen, 32 years old, from Arendal
arrived in New York 9 Dec 1910 aboard the ship "Adriatic":

I thought it might be him with the wrong age listed, but I can't find this person in Arendal, either!

I wonder why he can't be found in the 1900 census?

This is the posting I am working on:

Hi

I have seen this posting and searched around for Axel without luck.

IF he became a sailor, he would have startet around age 15/16 and then missed the 1900 census. His parents or one of them might have died before the 1900 census.
Just my thoughts!
Axel might also have been born/baptized near Arendal - like Arthur who lived in Dypvåg (today's spelling).

There is also a place in Sweden called Arendal, but I guess they would have known it if he was swedish?

The Aksel you found is a possibility, but a bit strange that he is as much as 5 years wrong in age.

Vivi
