Hi,
I have been working on a family from Østre Bærum i Asker.
The children of Andreas Johnsen were born on the farm "Steenseie". When the children married they all used the last name "Hovland".
Does anyone know if Hovland my have been part of Steen?
MvH,
Brian

Re: Hovland
"Steenseie" normally means that it was a small lot on a larger farm named Steen. Andreas Johnsen then was a "crofter", or in Norwegian "husmann". A "husmann" and his family rented a small part of a larger farm, paying the rent by doing manual work on the main farm.
Experts on the Baerum-Asker area can surely help you with the name Hovland. But you will make it easier to help you by including as much as you already know of census and church records. Important here is first of all the year when the children were born.
Fair hunt! Morten

Hi Morten,
Thank you for your reply.
Children of Andreas Johnsen and Grete Ingebretsdatter:
Johan Edward Andreasen, born 4 Sep 1827 Vestre Bærum, Asker, Akershus
Søren Andreasen, born 14 Aug 1830 in Vestre Bærum, Asker, Akershus
Christian Andreasen, born 17 Nov 1832 in Vestre Bærum i Asker, Akershus
Sophie Birgitte Andreasdatter, born 26 Jun 1835 in Steenseie, Østre Bærum i Asker, Akershus
Thorvald Andreasen, born 9 Dec 1837 in Steenseie, Østre Bærum i Asker, Akershus
Anne Sørine Andresdatter, born 3 Aug 1840 in Steenseie, Østre Bærum i Asker, Akershus
Caroline Andreasdatter, born 13 Jan 1850 in Steenseie, Østre Bærum i Asker, Akershus
I know that Christian, Søren and Thorvald all used the name Hovland when they married, so I am trying to find out if Hovland was a sub-farm of Steen.
MvH,
Brian

Re: Hovland
OK, I find some information of Steen farm and the crofters here: https://lokalhistoriewiki.no/wiki/%C3%9 ... nder_Stein
Steenseie was located between the main Steen farm and the Baerum Ironworks.
Other crofts (husmannsplasser): Steinsommen, Ôvre (Upper) Steinskogen, Nedre (Lower) Steinskogen, and Sagstua.
In the link included above (lokalhistoriewiki) there is mentioned a "Husmann og skomaker" (Crofter and shoemaker) Andreas Jonsen at Övre Steinskogen who had to meet in Court in 1851 accused for selling illegal liquor.
(Still no trace of "Hovland").

Re: Hovland
I find more info in the book as follows: Christensen, T. 1995. "Ankerveien - Greveveien - Krokskogveien, - - ", Cappelen Forlag A.S. Oslo. Pages 71 and 93.
I enclose a photo of the old Stein Farm (it does not exist anymore), and a map showing the location of the Steinskogen Crofts, just north of the Nordre Kolsaas Top (379 m a.s.l.).
Still no sign of "Hovland".

Re: Hovland
Hovland is a farm name you can find several places in Norway.
First part of the farm name - HOV - means a place of worship (in ancient Scandinavia).
