OT: Another kind of naming query

I notice that European nobility, most especially on the Continent but
also in Britain to a lesser degree, began to load a tremendous number
of names onto their children around the time of intense colonization
and empire-building. Since the names, both personal & hyphenated
multiple surnames, seem to display pedigree, I wonder if anyone has
studied this phenomenon as an adjunct to colonial activities (my
analogy is piling medals & badges onto puffed out chests). There is
some precedent for my hypothesis in that many societies take a
particular "marker" (identifying custom) to its most extreme state
when under some form of external pressure. It is clearest in societies
that have been colonized but might conceivably also occur in societies
under pressure to maintain a status quo in their favor. A name like
"Erik the Red" or even "James Stewart" would not do in recent years;
there must be name after name after name. It's a wonder that the noble
children are able to walk around under such a burden. Best, Bronwen
